You should see my bathroom. Its only small (that's part of the problem) but the real problem is the fact that the shelves are heaving with products. I am a self confessed beauty junkie. New stuff comes out and its in my bathroom before you know it. My boyfriend despairs.."where's my razor?!" he is heard to shout, from behind a wall of bottles. It really really was getting out of hand. Hair products were the worst culprits. In a never ending search for glossy flowing tresses, I have spent a fortune on every sort of shampoo, conditioner and styling product on the market. Cheap stuff, expensive stuff, salon stuff - you name it, I've tried it.
Then, one day, when all seemed lost.....A REVELATION.
I was ill and off work. Flicked onto QVC (yeah I know, I know...!) and they were demonstrating Aveda Shampure Shampoo.
Maybe it was being ill, maybe I was taken in by the presentation, but before I knew it, I had ordered some. About a week later it arrived. I sceptically unwrapped it, wondering how many uses it'd get before being chucked into the shampoo graveyard that is my bathroom!
Who are Aveda? A bit of background here - Aveda are an American company. They use 100% pure natural plant essences in their products and NO petrochemicals or mineral oils. This is great for both your skin and hair and also for the environment. It also means they won't leave anything nasty on your skin or hair. They don't use artificial foaming agents, like most shampoos and this one uses a base of natural coconut oil to cleanse - what could be more gentle?. If you want to read up on aveda, try going to their website at www.aveda.com. It's got lots of information about their products and the company as a whole and really makes interesting reading.
What's the packaging like? Plain and simple really. A tall slim 250ml bottle. Quite classy looking though, seemed to look expensive. It has a flip top, which is always useful with wet hands.
What does it smell like? Now here was a shock! No namby pamby fruity smells here! It was really strong. I guess you would either love it or hate it, but I loved it. Its an impossible smell to describe really, but it smells really "natural". Not perfumed, but sort of herbal/sweet. This would be because there are no "perfumes" in it. All the fragrance is derived from natural pure essential oils. Mmm!
What does it look like? I jumped (no, dragged myself) into the shower and poured the stuff into my hand. The shampoo is an average consistency and is a sort of rich golden colour. It's clear.
What hair type is it for? This shampoo is suitable for ALL hair types, but contains protein, which means it is especially good for damaged hair like mine, though as it is suitable for all hair types you just can't go wrong.
Lather? Loads! And the smell seemed to fill the whole room. It was really lovely.
Rinsing properties. It seemed to rinse off very easily and my hair felt really clean, but not stripped like some shampoos. After rinsing I used a little of my normal conditioner. (I have since bought the Shampure conditioner, which is great too!)
The results Let me tell you about my hair first of all. Nightmare. Its not straight. Its not curly. Helpfully(!) it's somewhere inbetween. This means it is constantly blow dried and then straightened with straightening irons. On top of that, I have blonde highlights. No wonder it doesn't like me! As you can imagine, getting it to be smooth and glossy is no mean feat and I often fail. Today it was different.
When I had finished it really did feel "different". Yeah yeah.... I hear you say. No, it really did! It felt sort of lighter. Really clean and smooth. Now I don't know why this is. Was it the lack of petrochemicals and silicones that most shampoos contain? I really don't know. Suffice to say I was impressed. For someone who has tried almost every shampoo on the market, THAT is pretty darn impressive.
My hair smelled really good too. So much so, that my boyfriend even commented on it. If you knew him, you would also know what an amzing thing that is!
Still, ever the sceptic, I tried the shampoo a couple more times to check that the results weren't a fluke and well, they weren't. I haven't looked back.
How much is it? Ah, now here's the rub. It ain't cheap. You can get it for around £8.50 a bottle in some department stores and QVC, but try www.lookfantastic.com - its cheaper on there. I initially bought the 250ml size, but I've found it's more economical to purchase the 1 litre size (with pump) at around £20. Now I know this isn't cheap but when I think what I have spent on £5 bottles of shampoo that have been used a couple of times and discarded, it really isn't so bad.
I've had my 1 litre size for about three months now and seem to have barely used any at all. I haven't even been tempted to buy anything else or waste my money on products that promise the earth and don't deliver.
Oh - and there's a LOT more room in the bathroom! :)
