When my baby was 4 months old, I decided to try & move her off of "teats" and on to "spouts" on the advice of all the baby web sites, magazines, health visitors etc.
First of all, I tried an AnyWayUp cup - but not a drop came out. I myself had a go too and couldn't belive how hard it was to get any liquid out of the damn things! Next I tried a tommee tippee trainer cup, but with exactly the same result. I was starting to get worried, especially as she already had her first teeth through and had started to chew through teats!
Then I came across a pack of white (4 months plus) trainer spouts from Avent. These fit onto to your existing Avent bottles - or alternatively you can buy a brightly coloured cup + handles with these spouts. Inside the spout, you also have to fit a 2 piece valve, making it more fiddly than other trainer cups, but you soon get used to it!
My daughter took to drinking from this Avent System straight away (when she was only 4 - 5 months old). I was literally able to throw away her bottle "teats" & change them all for "spouts" overnight!!! She loved the speed with which she could now drink, even on the "slower" white spouts! In fact, she still uses them now (at 20 months) for all her milk feeds as well as for her water/juice. Every so often I try her again on the Anywayup and Tommee Tippee cups (I don't want to feel like I've wasted my money!!), but still no joy!
The main advantages of the Avent ones are:
* You can just buy packs of the spouts/valves to fit on your existing bottles.
* They come in 2 age ranges - white for younger babies (approx 4 months) and green for older babies (approx 6 months).
* They don't leak or spill !!!
* You can keep the spouts clean when out and about by using your exising bottle lids if you're simply converting your already-owned Avent bottles. Or if you're buying the brightly coloured trainer cup version, they come with their own lids anyway.
I can't recommend these highly enough!
