I'm sure all new parents have been there at some point, your young baby is unsettled at night, you've tried feeding, winding, changing their nappy………but nothing seems to be working so you reach for the dummy, a last ditch attempt to soothe your child and perhaps grab a few hours sleep yourself. There is a huge range of soothers out there for babies from the best named brands to cheaper stores own varieties but one designed specifically for night time use is the Avent Night-time soother.
The soothers come in 3 age ranges and their style depends on the age you require, they are most often presented in clear plastic boxes containing 2 soothers. 0-3 months comes with a small teat perfect for younger mouths, a shaped shield to be comfortable under babies nose and a moveable handle so you can pick it up, put it in babies mouth etc with ease… they come in white and lemon colouring so are suitable for either boys or girls and have glow in the dark star patterns on them. The 3-6 months soothers have a slightly larger teat with a regular shaped shield and the usual style handle, also with a glow in the dark star design I've only seen these with blue designs and don't know if they do pink ones just for girls. The final size is for 6-18 months babies and has a larger teat and shield and comes in bolder colours but still with the star design and glow in the dark handle. Each soother comes with a clear plastic cap for hygiene purposes and the shields have "air holes" which are designed to prevent too much irritation to babies skin, the teats are made from silicone rather than latex and are taste and odour free.
I've so far had 2 babies and my third is getting ever closer, due this July, it can be exhausting during those restless nights and you can often become desperate for a solution to an unsettled baby. While I had never planned on using soothers I always kept some in just in case it became absolutely necessary during one desperate night, Elsa never really took to them and you'd have to swaddle her in a blanket covering her chin just so she wouldn't spit the soother out. Christopher however would occasionally accept a soother, especially during his colic suffering days, the sucking motion seemed to settle his stomach at night, and these Avent Night-time soothers were perfect, the glow in the dark handle & pattern make it easy to find in the darkness which is great because there's nothing more frustrating then baby waking up because they've spat out their soother and you have to fumble around for ages trying to find it.
We found that Christopher never really needed to go past the 3-6 month stage soother because his colic quickly settled and he began sleeping through the night, and neither of them would use soothers during the day. The changing shield shape and teat size make the soothers perfect for growing babies who's faces and teeth are naturally developing as time goes on, and the little handle makes them easy for parents to grip onto as well as older babies who's hands have become dextrous enough to hold the soother themselves. Another great feature of the soothers is that they can be placed in a sterilizer whether it be fluid, steam or microwave ensuring your baby is always using a clean, hygienic soother. It's always a good idea if you're going out and about to remember the soothers plastic covers, or even the case they come in, and take a spare, that way if baby spits one out on the floor you'll have a clean one handy, of course these are specifically designed with night time in mind although can be used during the day.
Now I wont get into the debate of whether babies should or should not use soothers, yes there is some theory that they can effect speech development, confidence and even tooth growth but there's also no denying that they can be a blessing to parents who's babies simply wont settle and need something extra to help them, it's really up to each individual parent to decide what is right for them and their baby, you could start out vowing never to use them and find yourself wholly dependent. Avent are a highly regarded brand and the quality of their products is always great, the Night-time soothers are no different, excellent quality and design and I would highly recommend them for your child's night time use if you really need them.
Avent soothers can be found in most pharmacies, supermarkets and places like Toys R Us and suppliers of baby equipment. Prices can range from £2.99 for 2.--Review also on Dooyoo (Butterbear)
