I have been breastfeeding my son for 5 months and feel that I am now able to review Avent Washable Breast Pads. For anyone who has breastfed, there is nothing worse than getting caught short (especially when out and about) and finding that you have wet patches on your tops! So I purchased Avent Washable Breast Pads at Boots for £4.99 after reading good reviews about them, but unfortunately I found them disappointing.
There are 6 washable breast pads and a laundry bag in the box. I decided to buy two boxes as I thought that one wasn't enough, but looking back I was too hasty in buying another box. The breast pads are quite big in size, so that they are suitable for various breast sizes. These breast pads are soft to the touch and the absorbent padding draws moisture away from the skin and traps it behind a leak proof liner.
The pads have a soft-brushed cotton lining which is soft and gentle against the skin and didn't cause any rashes or spots. They also look quite pretty as they have an embroided flower pattern on the front, not that anyone will be seeing this pretty design! The flower pattern is supposed to act as an anti-slip lace outer layer, but for me it wasn't very effective.
Included in the bag is a white laundry wash bag, which has a drawstring to keep the pads inside. This looks very similar to the ones you get with laundry detergent and tabs. The pads are machine washable and can be dried in a Tumble Dryer on the cool setting.
So, why don't I like them? Unlike disposable breast pads, these are quite stiff as the material is quite thick, so that it absorbs the milk. Unfortunately when you wear them you can see the outline in your tops. Even after a few washes the pads don't seem to soften at all and don't follow the fit of your bra. I have tried various bras with these and they don't provide a flawless fit. This is a big disappointment for me, as they look so obvious and are not an attractive look.
I found that the pads tend to move about a lot in your bra, especially at night. My son still wakes 2-3 times at night for feeds and I always single side breastfeed, so at night I end up with one breast bigger than the other. This makes the breast pads move when I am sleeping. Also when I get a letdown of milk; the pad doesn't always absorb the milk, so I end up with wet patches on my bra. The only way I can manage to keep the pads in place is by constantly readjusting my bra straps throughout the night.
The only advantage I can think of is that the Washable Breast Pads are more cost effective than buying disposable pads as they are reusable, so you are saving money.
In my overall opinion, I don't like the Advent Washable Breast Pads and am giving them 2 out of 5. The only reason I haven't given them 1 star is that they are washable, so in the long run it does save money compared to buying disposable pads. Other people may like these, but they are not for me as they move about too much and don't mould to the fit of your bra, leaving a visible outline.

Advantages: Saves money over disposables Disadvantages: Bulky
...bought a pack of 6 Avent pads at Boots for £4.99. They are made of a soft material with a waterproof backing & have a lacy side which aswell as looking a bit more feminine serves the purpose of 'gripping' the inside of your bra to make them more secure. They come with a small net in which to wash them so that they don't get lost among your laundry (vital if you don't want one whizzing out your sleeve in public when you take your freshly washed cardigan ... ...there's no telling how much money I've saved. Since they are not tapered at the edges, nor do they have indentations for your nipples, they are bulkier than disposables, so invest in a padded nursing bra, otherwise they'll be seen from space! They do soften & subsequently mould easier after washing the first time. I always wash mine in non bio detergent when washing baby's clothes, just to be sure that they don't cause any irritation to my skin. ...

Advent Washable Breast Pads
I am very proud to have been able to breastfeed my gorgeous baby girl and have used lots of things to help me keep up the good work, these being one of them. When you are breastfeeding, you often find that your breasts become very full just prior to feeding time, and a certain amount of leakage can occur. I find that mornings and late evenings are particularly bad for this and so I use breast pads to stop the milk showing ... ...I used disposable ones, but was pretty shocked at how quickly I went through them, and how fast I could fill and plastic bag full for the bin. The idea of filling our landfill sites with soggy breast pads did not fill me with glee, but rather horror, and so I looked out an alternative, and this is it!
The box of pads contains 6 round, soft pads which are designed for placing between your bra and your nipple in the usual way. They are made of brushed ...

Advantages: Less waste - don't fill your bin. Easy to wash in machine or by hand Disadvantages: Stick to sore skin, leak through
Unfortunately these pads stick to sore or cracked nipples and that means peeling them away, which inevitable takes some skin with it, and results in pain. I found the disposable ones better as they allow the nipple to stay moist, which is better if you are cracked. I hate to feel as though I am contributing to landfill with the disposable ones, but when you think that 2 pads are probably less material than a sanitary towel (which must be disposed ...

Advantages: very absorbant, pretty lace design Disadvantages: slightly thicker and so a little more noticable through clothes
I initially bought a couple of packs of Emma Jane washablebreastpads from JoJo Maman Bebe but found that they got soaked and I was running out of clean/dry ones to wear very quickly. So I bought a couple of packs of Aventwashablebreastpads from my local Sainsbury's and they were brilliant. They really showed up the Emma Jane ones.
The Aventpads were FAR superior in absorbency, and had a pretty lace design, making me feel miles prettier than the more 'clinical' looking Emma Jane ones.
The Aventbreastpads have kept their whiteness very well (the others have turned slightly grey over time, despite only being washed with 'whites') and are quick drying.
They also cost exactly the same as the other pack of breastpads.
My only complaint is that they are a bit on the thick side and show slightly though your clothes, but ...
After having my baby 6 weeks ago I have realised the importance of having some good quality breastpads - especially if you are breadtfeeding.
I first bought disposable breastpads from boots which were reasonably cheap but I found that they scrunched up too easily and irritated my npples so I decided to use some washable ones. I first bought the Aventwashablebreastpads which I was satisfied with but I needed some more as you only get 3 pairs in a pack! I bought the Kushies washablebreastpads - not becuase they were different or anything but just becuse I was placing an online order from one of the baby stuff .suppliers and these are the ones that were on sale here - so it was pure laziness that made me buy this particular brand!
They are slightly bigger than the washablepads made by avent and are gently contoured to fit ...
Advantages: environmentally friendly, cheaper Disadvantages: not leak proof, visable through clothes
For my first son I used disposable pads and found that I was spending around £8.00 a week on them. For my second son I decided to buy the washablebreastpads from avent. I bought 4 sets of 6 pads for around £5 each. I used them when I first started leaking milk at 20weeks pregnant and found they saved me a great deal of money as they did the job. When my baby was born and the milk came in I had a shock as I fond the absorbancy was inadequate for my needs. As soon as my son cried or I thought about feeding, even if they were fresh on, I found they leaked. I changed to johnsons dis[osable pads and havent looked back since. They absorbaed a great deal more and when out and about I could dispose of them easily and not have to carry around wet pads.
Another negative for these are they can be seen clearly through any tightish clothing ...
