I brought the Shea lip balm about two months ago. It was on offer at the time, with one of those BOGOF deals. BOGOF? I hear you cry? It stands for Buy One Get One Free. Clever eh?
I usually stick to the usual, boring lip balm on a roll, as the little pots the new wave of lip creams are coming in nowadays are quite annoying. I usually get my nail caught in the balm and end up with an index finger caked in it. Ideal if you are using it to stop nasties getting under your fingernails like engine oil or dirt while gardening (top tip there everyone), but not good when you are in the office or watching TV, or whatever you usually do when you feel like applying some lip balm. To me, hooking it out takes time and patience and I haven’t got either of those.
I opted for the balm in a pot purely because of the BOGOF offer, and I am glad that I did. The cream is gorgeous and the smell is heavenly. It’s so deliciously aromatic that I feel like eating it straight out of the pot! I continually lick my lips after applying it, which probably defeats the whole object of applying the stuff in the first place - but oh so what?
The Avon range that it comes from is Planet Spa, which is a relatively new range. They keep adding products to this range, so there are always new products and offers around. Planet Spa not only has the African Shea products, but also the Olive Oil, White Tea and South Pacific ranges. I haven’t tried any of these yet, as I am addicted to the African Shea range.
The Planet Spa range is currently on offer, so checkout www.avonshop.co.uk to get the following products at a 1/3 off.
The website describes the lip balm as “Held sacred for centuries for it’s mystical powers. Carry it with you always. Super creamy balm penetrates instantly to protect and nourish the lips.” They have a knack of making things sound sexy!
The Planet Spa range includes:
African Shea brown sugar body scrub £3.33 African Shea calming moisture mask £2.66 African Shea foot and elbow cream with AHA £2.66 African Shea hand and cuticle cream £2.00 African Shea whipped body balm £4.00
Remember to add 1/3 onto the price after the offer finishes, which is normally about a month.
The lip balm itself comes in a clear, glass pot with a plain white lid. It seems quite boring packaging really, but is livened up by a simple sticker stuck to the top of the lid. It makes it look quite contemporary and you don’t mind it being on display on your dressing table, bathroom shelf, cabinet, TV, microwave (delete as appropriate!).
When you take the lid off and smell the balm it (I really need smell-online-orama here!) is intoxicating, it smells like a mixture of coffee, butter, custard, nuts and chocolate milkshake. It’s not overpowering, just a really pleasant and yummy smell. The same smell is transported to your lips when you apply it, although it doesn’t last very long.
The balm itself is a creamy, beige colour, which matches the sticker on top of the lid. It is thick and very creamy, just like a lip balm should be. It isn’t unique in content, as most lip balms have the same consistency.
It contains a SPF (sun protection factor) of 15, which is ideal now the summer months are fast approaching. It works well during wintertime as well, which is the time when I tend to use lip balm most often. My lips often get dry and cracked, and the lip balm has been really effective in combating the problem.
It’s easy to apply – just use your index finger or whatever finger you prefer really and apply to your lips. I use quite a lot, because as I mentioned before I tend to lick a great deal of it off! The balm lasts quite a long time on your lips (unless you eat it like me!), I have applied it at night before, and can still feel it on my lips the next morning.
The pot is 10ml which is a handy size which you can carry in your pocket. It is small enough to be mobile, but big enough that it will last a very long time. It is currently on offer at £1.66 which is excellent value, but it retails normally at £2.50. Watch out for the offers though, as they are regularly updated.
I am totally addicted to this lip balm, however, I’m not sure if it’s the product or the smell. I think it’s a bit of both, and to prove or dispute this fact, I have just ordered the whipped body balm from the African Shea range. I hope I’m not disappointed and the smell is transferred to the body cream.
I would definitely recommend this product, it’s a bit more expensive than regular stick lip balms (£2), but I think it’s worth it. It’s a little luxury you deserve!
Words to describe the product – exotic, delicious, tempting, scrummy, edible (although I don’t think it is!!), exciting, new, addictive, moreish, luscious, lovely.
Now for the boring bits:
Ingredients

For anyone who has not heard of this product before then please let me explain. African Shea Butter body scrub is an all over body exfoliate and is from the Planet Spa range by Avon.
There are currently four product lines within this range which are:
African Shea - To soften and nourish.
Dead Sea - To detoxify and purify.
Mediterranean Olive Oil - To condition and refresh.
Arizona ... ...really pleased to received the body scrub as I was running out of my normal exfoliator.I was also really keen to try out a new brand as my usual brand had been leaving my skin feeling quite dry. My first impressions of the product were really good before I even started using it I was won over by the packaging.
The body scrub comes in a clear plastic 150ml bottle, with a plastic flip top lid. It has the Planet Spa logo stretching across the front ...

Flicking throught the Avon book, the Planet Spa Energising Face and Body Mist jumped out at me. It contains White Tea, believed to moisturise the skin. In fact, according to the label, it contains collagen and elastin to moisturise and tone skin. Wahey, I'll have some of that then.
The packaging of this product is nothing special. It comes in a clear plastic bottle much with a label displaying some trees (i think). ...a recent addition to the Avon 'Planet Spa' family. When it was introduced in the Avon brochure, it had one of those pages where you rub your wrist across the page to release the fragrance - and from that moment on, I was hooked! Having a confirmed sweet tooth, I would describe it as being like vanilla and chocolate!
As it was on an introductory offer of 1/3 off, I thought that I would give it a try at £4.00 for a 200ml tub.
What really intrigued ... ...received my first tub of Avon Planet Spa African Shea Butter whipped body balm (what a mouthful!!!), I noticed that on top of the container it was described as 'butter body balm' and nowhere was there any mention of the word 'whipped'. I was expecting the consistency to be very light, when in fact it is just like softened butter. In every Avon brochure I have seen it in, they continue to describe it as 'whipped' which I feel is misleading.
Anyway, ...

body lotion for my après bath sessions. It was then that someone pointed me in the direct of the Avon book which I'd steadfastly ignored at work and gushingly recommended the PlanetSpaRange. After browsing the book and noting that they still sold the perfume that Nan bought every Christmas without fail I balked at the idea but after being informed of their 100% satisfaction guarantee or your money back offer I decided to throw caution to the wind and parted company with the best part of £20 on a variety of PlanetSpabath goodies.
Avon introduced the PlanetSpaRange back in 2003, giving it a minimalist packaging policy, hyping up the liberal use of Shea Butter, Sea Salt and Olive oil gained from foreign climes to the point you actually think you are buying products as "ethical" as the Body Shop's. Avon was the first cosmetic ...
