"The fresh scent of a sea breeze..."

When it comes to perfumes, I like to try before I buy - after all, many fragrances are very expensive, and I don't want to end up wasting money . The trouble with this is that the air around most perfume counters is so thick with scent it confuses my senses, and I can never get a good sense of a smell until after leaving the store - by which time I've usually forgotten the name of it .

Luckily, Avon have this problem licked with the handy 'rub and sniff' pages inside their catalogues - you rub your wrist on the page, and the scent is transferred to your skin, albeit usually much lighter than it would be if you'd actually spray it . It's a good general guideline to a scent though - and I've discovered many fantastic Avon branded perfumes this way, including 'Windscape'.

I really like the simple design of the bottle, a sort of curled triangle in a light blue, with some slight wave shaped raised bits toward the base . It really fits with the name of the scent - bringing to mind a crisp sea breeze on a warm summers day.

And a warm summers day is exactly when I think this perfume is best worn . It has to be admitted that on first spray, this has a rather unpleasant strong alcohol scent, and it actually takes a minute before any actual fragrance notes come through, but then a fruitiness comes through - a crisp and crunchy scent of apple, combined with a sharper tang or citrus and something very delicately floral - I'm not entirely sure what the floral scent is, but at a guess I would say elderflower blossom. The fruitiness is quite pleasant, although in my opinion slightly at odds with both the bottle design and the product name.

However, the middle notes are perfect - the citrus fades to just the tiniest hint, and the scent of blossoms seems to grow, only this time paired with the unmistakeable scent of the seaside. No, not fish and chips, but a real smell of a crisp salty sea breeze, just delicately underlining the fresh florals.

The base note of this perfume is white musk . Now, I'm normally not a big fan of musk scents, at least not on my skin . I find them a little bit wee-smelling, and in general they make me feel a little stinky and not particularly fresh . I also tend to associate musk based scents with older people. However, in this scent it is very unobtrusive, and very well balanced with the other scent notes.

The overall feel of this scent is fresh and vibrant, and (apart from the strong alcohol smell on first spraying) it's actually rather a delicate scent . It does last on my skin for around 4 hours, which I think is a rather short length of time. It's very suitable for daytime wear, particularly in summer, thanks to the fresh, almost cool scent, and I think it is probably more suitable for younger people (35 or below) or very casual situations, as despite the fresh and vibrant smell it rather lacks in sophistication and glamour.

The price of this can vary - Avon frequently change prices or have offers on. The full price is £8.50, for a 50ml bottle, but I have seen it listed in the brochure for as little as £3.50.

If you don't have an Avon rep near you, you can also order online via www.avonshop.co.uk, but I do believe they charge for delivery, so it may be worth waiting until you have a larger order to make.

Overall, an inexpensive perfume with a vibrant light and airy scent, suitable for daytime casual wear, but lacking the sophistication (and staying power) to make it into the evening.

I see this "sea breeze" on perfumes and deoderants, room fresheners even and always wonder just what people expect it to smell of.....personally it brings to mind of sun tan oil mixed with some diesel fumes! R. xxx
