Once again I have been asked by my partner to right a review so I thought I'd try something I use on a daily basis and make me think about the review in detail.
I have used Avon tyres on fords for the last 3 years I have previously used Pirelli, Michelin and Goodyear (though not all on the same car).
On the car in question that I am using for the purpose of this review is a 1998 2.0 16vFord Mondeo, I have used Pirelli's 195/60 R15 88H P6000 tyre and Avon's ZV3 195/60 R15 88H ZV3 tyre.
I'm going to explain the basics about tyres; every type of tyre from each manufacture is different because they use different rubber compounds and methods to create the tyre. Soft compounds will wear fast but provide excellent grip where as a hard compound will do the opposite and wear slow and have less grip. Manufactures create tyres of varying levels of compounds to suit both the car and driver though the compound details are not normally required for an every day car.
The size and rating of a tyre can be seen on the wall of the tyre and will look like 195/60 R15. The 195 part of the tyre is the amount of tread that is in contact with the road. The 60 part is the depth from the tread to the rim of the wheel. The R15 part is the size rim the tyre will fit to. 88H is the load and speed rating of the tyre, the 88 is the weight factor that the car can take and the H is the speed the tyre can handle. E4 means the tyre has been tested and passed by the European Regulatory Authorities.
In my opinion I have found the Avon ZV3 to perform well in both the wet and dry, having me surprised at the amount of grip they have to offer, and I have been known to have a heavy right foot. The grip astounds me for the price of the tyre, (£45-£55 depending on garage), being slightly cheaper than Pirelli, Michelin and Goodyear alternatives. This is not meaning though that they wear faster than the alternatives as they lasted about the same amount of miles as the Pirelli set I had on. I have used them in the snow and only skidded in a place which is well known for black ice forming, but the skid was controlled and the tyres worked at the first sign of grip. I have pushed the tyres where they have lost traction in corners but through my own doing and I would expect all the tyres in this sort of price range to do so to, but the instant grip that the tyres provide when I want there to be grip is spot on for my driving style.
I also have friends who also have used Avon's on other cars and I have never heard a bad report. I did have one friend who said that the tyre didn't hold up as much as they were expecting it to in the wet but that was a different compound and type of tyre.
In my conclusion I love this tyre for the price, grip, durability and security it offers me. I would recommend them to anyone
Thanks for reading my review I hope it has been of help
Pete
