The game is generally based on the annual Baja 1000 race that takes place in Mexico. In Edge of Contol you can choose to take part in hill climb events, rallies and races. All these events take place on tracks and courses that are much longer than the average you would expect in race games, not only are they long but some courses are treacherous which makes for a challenging drive! You may sample any of the above events which i found great to try out all the top-end trucks and faster vehicles. But the main course of action in the Edge of Control Is the Career Mode where you will need to spend some quality time working you're way through the ranks unlocking locations and vehicles. This mode is great but you have to be prepared to go back to basics starting with the worst of the game's many vehicle classes. These lower end vehicles however lack the speed and strength of those from a higher class. All elements such as suspension, brakes, grip, etc also lack in quality but this does encourage you to better you're score and gain a better motor! You will also notice that the lower end models will suffer significant damage making them a tad more difficult to drive. But patience with these vehicles will pay off when you're eventually starting a race in a far more powerfull top end truck! No matter what vehicle you have though, damage is to be expected and when you are in need of some mechanical repair you have options which vary according to you're event. Circuit races feature the obvious pit-stop where you will stop for a few second and get quickly back into the race. In a rally, you're repair will come in the form of a helicopter which you will call when you come to a stop. Sometimes you will have to wait as its crew will be busy tending to another vehicle or eating ice cream! But as soon as th crew are ready you will get a quick repair. If the vahicle you have suffers a flat tyre, providing you have a spare you can stop at any point to change it. (most vehicles start a race with a spare tyre but they tend to fall off with damage)! You have the opportunity to upgrade you're vehicle throughout the game. These upgrades feature: engine, tyre, brakes, suspension, weight, etc. Overall the handling of the vehicles in Baja Edge of Control is enjoyable, with a feel of realism mixed into the gameplay. The overall game design is impressive and courses are pleasant. The surrounding environment tends to lack detail at times but when you drive past at speed this does not really matter. As you would expect racing games are more fun when played with friends and family. Baja is no different. The game offers split screen support for up to 4 players and online support for a starting grid of 10! Audio is adequate, engines sound throughout the races which you would expect. When not in a race, Mexican music is played faintly in the background. It does loop so can become repetative but this game is all about the race and vehicle classes so i doubt you will concentrate much on the music. Overall i give this game a 7.5 out of 10!
Advantages: Good multi-player mode, lots of options Disadvantages: Too difficult to make progress
This review is for Baja – Edge of Control, an off-road driving game for the Playstation III. The concept of the game is easy, drive your vehicle around tracks as quickly as possibly, win races, progress through the game, try different tracks and win more trophies. It’s a well worn style of gaming and so there’s a lot of similar games in this genre. You start the game driving in the desert, but you progress through to other backgrounds such as woodlands ... ...especially for a games players such as myself who are not the most natural players in the world, is that it is just too difficult. Normally games ease you into the game play so that you can make some progress early on, learn the game and gradually get better. In this game however, you really need to drive around the track in a near perfect way to be able to win the race. The problem with the game is that you need to be very good to be able to make ...
