WHAT IS IT?
DIY SOS is a home makeover show that focuses on those who really desperately need help after an unsuccessful attempt at some serious DIY. I'm not talking the odd wonky shelf here or there, more like massive holes where walls should be and rooms that look more like a building site than a home. The team have 5 days to turn these houses from disaster zones into beautiful living spaces that fulfil the owner's wildest dreams. There is usually a genuinely good reason why these people ask for help sorting out the mess they have made - often illness or a sudden change in circumstance has left the family with no proper home. DIY SOS has been running for 10 years and is currently on its 18th series! You can catch it on a Thursday on BBC at 8.30pm.
THE TEAM
What sets DIY SOS apart from other home makeover shows is that the team is so funny. They are constantly cracking jokes at one another's expense or engaging in some kind of silliness for the viewers' amusement. Here is a little about some of the main members of the team:
MARK MILLAR A new addition to the team in this series, Irishman Mark is a carpenter and is responsible for all things weird, wonderful and wooden. He is constantly the butt of jokes about his sometimes indecipherable accent and his prominent nose which Nick Knowles broke once if his website is to be believed!
JULIA KENDELL Another newcomer, Julia is a designer and comes up with the vision for how the room will eventually look. The guys often mock her artistic leaning by pre-empting her every time she suggests a room should be 'traditional with a modern twist'
JULIAN PERRYMAN A big lovable teddy bear of a plasterer, West Country boy Julian often shows his feminine side by dancing, singing or even reciting poetry!
BILLY BYRNE A cheeky chappy from Watford who gets the mickey taken out of him mercilessly by the rest of the gang. Billy is the electrician who you really wouldn't want fixinf your wiring.
NICK KNOWLES Ah, Nick Knowles. I must confess I have quite a serious crush on this man. Nick presents the show and mucks in with the rest of the team as well as interviewing the home-owners. He has a good sense of humour most of the time but has been known to throw the odd strop in previous series!
The show is packed full of handy hints and tips as well as laughs. I really enjoy this show even though I don't really do DIY. It's lovely to see the look on people's faces when their new room is finally revealed and its good to see people down on their luck finally getting the treat they deserve. This show seems a lot more 'real' than other home makover shows as the outtakes and cockups are left in for the viewers' amusement. The team are really funny and it makes for a very entertaining half an hour's viewing.
Advantages: A good concept and makes you realise its not that bad at home. Disadvantages: A bit boring
The people on this programme really have no idea do they?
Taking down walls is not something you just decide to do one day is it? They must be mad.
I must admit though, its a pleasant change form the makeshift DIY programmes like Changing rooms and real rooms where they just do a quick fix. These rooms are designed to last AND to fix the bombsite the tennants have created.
Still it gives us all hope that there is someone worse than us at DIY and ... ...of our worries.
This programme shows the real worst case senarios in DIY. It also give the public a way of fixing it for them by sending in the experts to the worst house every week to be fixed.
What im going to give you is a guide so don't end up in the next episode.
Remember DIY is, meant to be fun and not a chore.
At the moment, the biggest single time consuming occupation after going to Work. It comes before Sleeping. Im not allowed to sleep. ...

Advantages: None Disadvantages: People become more lazy
This must be what the people living in these homes are doing.
I could never dream of living in a property that when you walk into the bathroom you can be seen on the landing because your lazy husband has taken off the door and never replaced it.
In my mind the people that are asking for help on this programme really need to get off their backsides and get to B & Q or Homebase for a tin of paint or even ring the local brickie or odd job man (they ... ...the job.!!!
3 houses every week are up for nomination for a 1 day makeover because the wife or the husband have made a slightly large hole in the ceiling and never bothered to cover it up or have knocked down a wall between the kitchen and the outside and have left a polythene sheet instead of a wall!! are these people mad or what.
So, people then vote for the one they feel most sorry for to have a days makeover by four proffessionals.
I can see ...

Advantages: Lowri Turner presenting Disadvantages: A bit lightweight but watchable
This program, one of the many that have sprung up recently on the home / interious / make overs bandwaggon is presented Lowri Turner. A good presenter, down to earth, who doesn't seem to 'lord it up' over the 'contestants' on the program.
The concept of the show is, three families (who obviously don't have a shread of pride:-)) are selected each week to come on the show and show to the nation their DIY bungles. And heaven, you wouldn't *believe* ... ...thought *my* hubby was bad at DIY. You ought to see some of this lot. Anyway, after the program folks are then supposed to ring in and chose which one of the families will be featured on the following week's program getting their bodge jobs put right. It is quite an entertaining program and definitely one to try if there is not *that* much on on the other chanels, and it is definitely interesting to compare before and afters. ...
Advantages: watching people humilliate themselves Disadvantages: knowing you share the same country with these idiots
every week on diy sos there are 3 families that want help! they might want help with a new bathroom or a re-decoration, but mainly they want help because there partner has taken a hammer to a wall about a year ago and never done any thing since.
Why would you do that? I dont want to sound snobby, but what stupid twat would do that? Imagine what it would feel like with no bedroom wall!
Then when there partner has wreked the house the other half ... ...help them. But i still have no sympathey for the other half, as they should pick up the yellow pages call a builder, plumer, handy man etc and pay for the job instead of wanting bbc handouts!
a part from that simple fact i thing it's a damn good laugh watching people humilliate themselves on tv.
But there are the odd few you do have to feel sorry for. Watch the show and your find out what it's like yourself.
I do actually like the show. ...

Advantages: great ideas Disadvantages: comedy sketches
DIY SOS is on BBC One and it is a programme that i enjoy as it is about DIY and gives you some great ideas in how to decorate your home and it is now ready to start its 10th series.
DIY SOS is a show that picks someone each week that has a DIY disaster and they then go and redecorate the whole of the space whether it be a kitchen or the front room they always do a great job and give me some great ideas on how to decorate the home. Also unlike most ... ...in so manage to do a proper job where as some shows these days have 60 minutes or something silly to try and decorate a house in, which to a high standard is impossible.
With the presenter Nick Knowles, Billy the electrican, Jules and Chris the plasterers, combined with the Irish charm of carpenter Mark no job is too big or too small. The team work really well together and after all these years still all work together and the fun they have make ...
