The people on this programme really have no idea do they? Taking down walls is not something you just decide to do one day is it? They must be mad. I must admit though, its a pleasant change form the makeshift DIY programmes like Changing rooms and real rooms where they just do a quick fix. These rooms are designed to last AND to fix the bombsite the tennants have created. Still it gives us all hope that there is someone worse than us at DIY and that the wobbly floorboard or crooked shelf is the least of our worries. This programme shows the real worst case senarios in DIY. It also give the public a way of fixing it for them by sending in the experts to the worst house every week to be fixed.
What im going to give you is a guide so don't end up in the next episode.
Remember DIY is, meant to be fun and not a chore. At the moment, the biggest single time consuming occupation after going to Work. It comes before Sleeping. Im not allowed to sleep. I must get the house finished. My wife said so! So I know what im talking about. Im very experienced as this is my 2nd home and I follow a strict guideline. If I cant do it, I dont attempt it. But perhaps, this is one of the biggest mistakes of the DIY fraternity. Speed is not the answer. Patience, trial and error, attention to detail and a good idea before you start go a long way towards a good job. Thats my story and im sticking to it!
So here are my top tips to do and dont.
DONT ----
DONT rush a job.- A rushed job will lead to a bad finish. Sticking something up before something else is dry will lead to tears as will repainting wet surfaces.
DONT attempt jobs too complex. - Sounds easy enough taking that wall out doesnt it? WRONG! if you cant do something or you dont think you can, get in a professional. Its better to pay now than later!
DONT try using machinery you dont know how to use. - Power tools seem like fun toys until you drill through your hand or cut off a finger. Read the manual. Have you tightened everything up properly? Is everything installed right? Have you started it up the right way?
DONT start a DIY kit before reading the instructions. - MFI provide them for a reason. To stop you sticking something on in the wrong order. Thats why you always have spare bits at the end!
DONT attempt jobs on unknown environments. - Drilling into walls with Electrical wires behind or Pipework can be deadly. Always check first before going ahead and getting electrocuted.
DONT try making do with the wrong tool. - Having the right gadget saves time and money. Good example is a tile saw for difficult cuts. It will save a lot of time and money to have one rather than trying to burn your dremmel out (I know, ive tried it!)
Enough of the negativity. Lets look at the positive.
DO --
Do make sure you have the know how for a job before undertaking it. It can get messy otherwise. You dont want to be calling DIY SOS in do you?
Do take your time. A better result will be achieved.
Do Get the right tools and materials for the job.Saves an expensive job when it has to be redone!
Do Get some help if you need it. 2 Pairs of hands (and minds) are better than one.
Having just bought a house I know I am going to be doing some of this, starting with painting and carpets straight away, moving onto the 'easy stuff' as the women call it. Before I know it I will be as bad as you!!! Good op. Ken
