Dinnerladies was excellent, from beginning to end. Victoria Wood managed to create a group of real characters, each played perfectly (mostly by members of Victoria's normal band of players - it certainly helps to have talent queuing up to work with you!) Some may have been put off by the gentle stories which at times seemed to consist of less plot and action that an average 5 minutes of any soap currently gracing our screens. But if you stuck in there you would have discovered that (just as in real life) there was plenty going on under the surface, each character having his or her own story, live and problems. When the jokes came (thich & fast) they seemed to fit in to the story perfectly, unlike some of the "formula" X jokes per minute shows. Like many others, I'm sad that there won't be another series. But also grateful in a way - Victoria Wood created a brilliant show but one of her other great talents is knowing to stop while still on the top and while everyone still wants more. By doing so, she has demonstrated that great sense of timing which makes her such a great comedy writer and performer in the first place. If you haven't seen it, buy the video, sit down for the evening with a pizza/chocolates/bottle of wine, and enjoy. You have a treat in store. (And if you have seen it, do the same - it will still be a treat!)
