This is one soap that is utter and complete cheese. But amusing, entertainable cheese. I watch this programme as regularly as clockwork (if that makes sense.) Its on every weekday at 1:45pm and then repeated at 5:30pm. I have to watch the 5:30 showing, as I go to school during the day, but thankfully, its just as good.

OK, so I said this soap is cheesy. Why? Well to start with most the girls are really good looking, and none of the blokes are exactly ugly (though you may want to judge for yourself.) Everyone knows one another really well, and there isn’t much arguing. Well, at any rate, it always gets solved quickly and perfectly. Love affairs are often similar, although slightly more interesting. Unfortunately they’re predictable, but they’re still entertaining. The ‘love’ story at the moment involves the Ramsey Street residents Tad Reeves (Jonathon Dutton,) Paul McClain (Jansen Spencer,) and a non- Ramsey street, new member Larissa (who is not yet on the cast list, or in the beginning sequence where your introduced to the regular characters.)

Anyway, the story; Paul met Larissa whilst he was in Paris, and they hit it off. When Paul came back from Paris, he carried on e-mailing Larissa for a while. Then Tad took up the task ……. Without Paul knowing. He e-mailed Larissa pretending to be Paul, and moved the relationship with Larissa on from friendship to something more. Unfortunately Tad also fell for Larissa. When Larissa returned to Australia, just aftert about the e-mails, Paul pretended to be Tad for a while, the person in the e-mails. This didn’t work, so they soon told Larissa what had happened, and both said they fancied her. She went on a date with each to ‘choose’ between them. Unfortunately she couldn’t choose between them. At this point Tad and Paul were supposed to walk back. But, you guessed it……..they didn’t. They both carried on the relationship, in secret, thinking they are the only ones carrying it on. Then a fourth person comes into the slightly complicated story. Flick (Felicity Scully – played by Holly Valance) is Tad and Pauls’ best friend. They both ‘fess to her about their relationship, in secret. She confronts Larissa, and she persuades Felicity not to tell. Then it gets a lot more crazed, Larissa turns up at the boys school……….. to become a student.

So fairly typical stuff, even if it sounds complicated written down, it sounds better on TV and is spread out over three/four weeks. This makes it more understandable.

There are other storylines going on in Neighbours, but I won’t tell you them all because that would be boring. The great thing about Neighbours is that it easy to pick up the storyline, so if you miss it, its easy to catch up. The bad part is you always know the storyline weeks in advance, as it is aired six weeks ahead in Austrailia, and its reported in all the mags. What you don’t know you find out through the grapevine, even if you don’t ask.

So, the history. Well you probably don’t want to know it all (I wouldn’t) as it is long and rather dull. The programme started in 1985, although it took a while to catch on (though I don’t know why, its Ace.) I have been watching it for two years, and I’m really into it. The characters have changed a lot since a first watched it, and I know when I see old episodes on digital I only recognise about two people. One of the longest running characters, Madge, died a couple of months age, in an episode which, cheesy as Neighbours is, moved me to tears. As did the wedding between Libby (Kym Valentine) and Drew (Dan Paris.) I am actually rather ashamed about this, because Neighbours isn’t your typical cry at programme.

To sum up, I think I’ll tell you about the current characters, a bit at least. Drew owns half of the garage, he is in partnership with Lou Carpenter and his wife Libby is the daughter of Karl and Susan Kennedy. She is pregnant, although after a motoring accident she was told she wouldn’t be able to have children, so continuing the pregnancy is a risk to her health. This newly wed couple no longer live in Ramsey street, although they still feature in the programme.

Karl and Susan Kennedy have been married for, like, forever, although the marriage has had its ups and downs, affairs and all. Karl is played by Alan Fletcher and Susan by Jackie Woodburne. Karl is the local GP, who owns his own practishen, which he works at with his nephew Darcy. Susan is headteacher at the local school, the characters Teresa Bell (Krista Vendy) and Evan Hancock (Nicholas Opolski) work there as well, which can lead to rows.

The Hancocks are the newcomers on the block. The mother Maggie Hancock is played by Sally Cooper. Her Stepson Matt is played by Stephen Hunt, her son Leo by Antony Hammer, and her young daughter Emily by Isabella Oldham. That’s all I’ll say, because I’m going on a bit now(OK a lot.)

The Scullys live at No. 26. The dad Joe Scully (Shane Conner) is a bit uptight, but is kept in line by is wife Lyn (Janet Andrewartha.) They have three children. Flick, the middle one, I’ve told you about, accept that she doesn’t live at home, but with her boyfrien Joel, of whom her Dad doesn’t approve. Stepphie (Carla Bonner) is the oldest and Chelle (Kate Keltie) the youngest.

Harold Bishop (Ian Smith) occupies No.24, huband to the dead Madge, and Foster father to Tad and Paul. He is one of the oldest cast members and best friends with Lou Carpenter (Tom Oliver.) Lou has a young daughter called Louise (Jiordan Anna Tolli.) Sharing their house is Darcy, a new character, whose girlfriend is Dionne, although he has feelings for her best mate Tess (Teresa.)

Dionne (Madeline West) lives at No. 32 with her mate Toadie (Ryan Moloney) and her ex Joel Samuels (Daniel MacPherson.)

OK, so I could tell you more about Neighbours, but that would only bore you. It’s missable, but perfectly entertaining. Thanx for reading my op.

Very entertaining but I wouldn't describe it as cheese, ok it's acting is not always Eastenders quality (well they aren't perfect either) and the story lines can be repetative at times and a bit predictable to a point but is can be true to life and that's why I like it so much, a may be missing something but that's my POV, superbly detailed op there, welldone :) James
