Advantages Comedy at its best!
Disadvantages No longer reapted on the beeb
*I stand corrected (thank you to Pauljm), as apparently Jason was not the comedy giant he is today back then! Being -4 when the show was produced he wasn't as big as when i watched the repeats first time around! Maybe this show was the start of something big for David Jason!*OAH is set in a corner shop owned by Arkwright (Ronnie Barker) a fat, money obsessed scrooge of a shopkeeper with a vicious stammer. David Jason plays Granville, Arkwrites’ nephew who is both generally and sexually oppressed.
Each episode sees Granville – the errand boy – being forced into one of Arkwrites’ money hungry schemes in order to save a few pennies! More often than not Granville ends up getting hurt and ironically being comforted by the very ample bosom of Nurse Gladys Emmanuel (played by Lynda Baron) – Arkwrites’ main object of desire (after money of course!).Who can forget the cash register strieking fear in the hearts of all that used it; Arkwrites moneybelt and distrust of banks and Granvilles desperate attempts to date the milklady!
It seems hard to believe that this series could run for 4 series with such a basic story line. This is testament to the pure comedy genius of both Barker and Jason, who provided hours of classic comedy moments not only with impeccable timing but an amazing chemistry – only rivalled in my opinion by Jason and Lyndhurst in Only Fools and Horses.OAH was written by Roy Clark and produced by Sidney Lotterby. I can’t say I have heard any more of either but they did a top-notch job with OAH! The show ran from 1973 and was repeated almost constantly until the mid eighties! I’m sure it is doing the rounds of UK Gold – if not, it certainly deserves to be!
If you haven’t already seen this show then I would whole-heartedly recommend renting the videos from your local library or checking UK Gold (and equivalent channels) for repeats. OAH maybe a little dated now and almost certainly some of the funniest bits might be deemed a little politically incorrect – but this wil always be a favourite of mine!
