Advantages: Can see some exclusive videos/performances
Disadvantages: Not as good as it was!

Top of the pops has been going for many, many years and over them years the stage has been filled with many successful, great performers and some not so good!!

The show was one of the first programmes, which featured bands/artistes performing live (or not so live!!) They also play the new released videos and quite regularly have exclusives.

...The idea of the show is to reach out to all ages and music tastes. Unfortunately as pop is very fashionable at the moment there is a lot of pop acts on the show such as S Club 7 and Atomic Kitten. However this will appeal to a lot of viewers.

I have watched since I was very small, I can remember singing and dancing along to East 17 – Deep!!

Over the years I have lost interest and my music taste has changed and ... more

Pop One Off

Advantages: See op
Disadvantages: See op

Okay, it’s not *so* bad that you want to turn over, but really, who can be arsed with TOTP anymore? It’s not that I find it DREADFUL, it’s just... there. Like rind on Edam, very fast rapping on a Busta Rhymes CD and a poorly head after 10 shots of gold tequila, you can always rely on it. Sort of. For over 30 years (it was launched in 1964 - thanks to stevethesleeve for correcting me!), Top Of The Pops, or ver Pops as I like to ...
...fairly apt, seeing as some of the acts and presenters should be in one, ha ha. The premise has always been the same from its conception – the top acts in the UK charts travel on down to the studios in London to mime (sometimes VERY badly) to their song and mug at the camera. It’s a simple enough set up, which was enlivened (and kept cheap) by the presence of Radio 1 DJs such as Dave Lee Travis (named “the hairy cornflake” ...

Top Of The Flops

Advantages: memories of Liz Kershaw's sassy earrings...
Disadvantages: pointlessly revamped and outdated

Every generation has its own memories of 'Top Of The Pops'. For some there's Jimmy Saville introducing Gary Glitter in a retrospectively sinister way. Imprinted on the memory of others is the be-maned Bruno Brookes and his chunky yellow microphone, reeling off statistics about Five Star and Wham! with the enthusiasm of a tartrazined-up toddler. And then of course there was that moment of organisational genius where the lisping Chris Eubank was the ...
...track 'Cecilia'… However, the 1990's and early 2000's have seen TOTP rebranded time and time again in an effort to remain the flagship music television programme. Whilst it was still getting twice the number of ratings as ITV's nearest rival, 'CD:UK', youth TV guru Andi Peters was put in charge of rebranding the show in an attempt to gain back its declining audience. Launching after a blaze of publicity this week, we were promised a new theme tune, ...

It will never die Unfortunately

Advantages: The odd decent song/video
Disadvantages: Far too many to bore people with.

TOTP has been teetering on the brink of the abyss for at least 20 odd years now and criticised by just about everyone who takes an interest in this show. Even back in the late 70s people moaned that it lacked any imagination because the bands they had on were always the same bands playing their "samey" music under a mimed-influence and trying to look sincere and/or cool but never both at the same time. I guess if you've seen some of the TOTP compilations ...
...of those old bands you used to love when you were younger. The fact is, regardless of era, regardless of musical taste & fashion, regardless of what people say - TOTP always somehow manages to survive & shuffles on regardless. Yes they've tried to look more trendier, with their so-called ultra cool star DJs, CGI animation & livelier studio acts, but at the end of the day TOTP is pants and always will be pants; it will be pants in the future as it ...

Change the Record the Needle Is Stuck

Advantages: Entertainment for the kids.
Disadvantages: It's the same week after week, equating top 10 with good music.

Hmm...I wonder why you never see any live performances on "TOTP"? Could it be that most of the acts can't actually sing? Then again, that's just my personal opinion. TOTP has been going for decades now, so they must be doing something right. Every friday night for half an hour you can watch a handful of chart toppers "perform" in the TOTP studio. Most of the acts are pop bands, commercial dance music, R&B etc, that are succesful chart entries. In ...
...decent indie, hip-hop or rock band and sometimes they even perform live! Hats off to the show, as it is known internationally and the format has been sold to many countries worldwide. Ok, Ok, it's also an evenings entertainment for anyone under the age of 15. Content is very limited, mostly top 20 entries along the lines of rival ITV show, CD:UK. The longer this show runs, the variety of music seems to become more and more limited. For example, ...

Is this how we are goiign to die?

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

Do we really have to put up with the trash that is on what used to be an actually enjoyable programme, For the past several months I have watched and listened to nothing but rubbish in the charts. I have not heard a guitar for months. I sometimes wonder if the exist anymore, or if they ever did, and the whole actual music as it should be scene, was just a big hoax. I am absolutely baffled that in the past few weeks, Miss Briteny Spears, Ai The Big ...
...)Made it into the top 10. What are we going to? Go into hybernation maybe, until somone brings out something worth listening to? Seems the best option at the moment, rather than waste my Friday 7.30-8.00 slot, watching a show, just hoping something good is going to come on. Please help me in my matter of trying to change the charts. I am campaigning to change the way we see music for ever. Join me. Write to your MP ...

great station

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

What can I say this television station has come up trumps many times over the last few years. It has brought us some of the best live event television coverage , some great dramas, first class soaps, and one of the best variety line up ever. My week would not be the same without the BBC 1 and the following shows , Neighbours, Diagnosis Murder, Top of the Pops, Changing Rooms, Town Challenge, Eastenders, Byker Grove, Watchdog, Paddington Green, Through the Keyhole, Airport, Glasgow Kiss, The Vicar of Dibley, . There are also a great range of films on every night . I can?t wait to see what they will give us once the new season begins. ...

Fantastic viewing

Advantages: family entertainment, and fun for children
Disadvantages: some poor programmes about

BBC1 the channel that has been around the longest on terrestrial tv, containing some of the best tv soaps. A fine selection for children, as when they come home from school, they can watch CBBC until 5.30 and for those who like cheesy australian soaps, well i do, can watch the fantastic Neighbours. There is then the National News, and later into the evening there is EastEnders, which is watched by millions of viewers throughout Britain and has no interruptions such as adverts half way through it. That is one of the best things about BBC1 there are no adverts, you can sit back and watch a programme without any annoying breaks. Where as ITV for example have adverts, but can still manage to pull off good tv watching. With other shows around such as TOTP(Top Of The Pops) on a Friday, BBC1 can provide you with some great entertainment. ...

The first channel

Advantages: Wide variety of programmes to suit everyone, no ads
Disadvantages: Costs £101 a year!

BBC1 was the first TV channel in the UK. There is a very wide variety of programmes, from soaps such as Eastenders and Neighbours to Top Of The Pops to Animal Hospital to French and Saunders to sport to documentaries. There really is something for everybody here. The ceefax service is OK, but not as good as teletext on ITV and Channel 4. One of the great things about the BBC is that there are NO adverts, I bet it's the only channels in the world with no ads! However, we are currently paying £101 a year for the privilage, which in my opinion is ridiculous. ...
