This is a BBC programme playing an important part in day time television it has appeared of both BBC1 and BBC2 it was first show on BBC1 in 1990 and I am sure it was watched back then and still is watched and enjoyed by a wide audience who find themselves entertained by watching television throughout the day.
I only started watching this as from being young my mother would have it on during the day ...

No Bucket of flowers

Advantages: Patricia has managed to craft a role out of nothing
Disadvantages: In doing so, the rest of the show is dreadful in comparison.

To understand my hatred for such an appalling series as this requires a brief (but not the briefest) of reminders of what the show was all about. Patricia Routledge, the magnificent actress she is, makes the role of Hyacinth Bucket, a vulnerable BUT mostly untolerable character (of which she has done well to drag this series to it’s invisible demise). The prissy housewife who is an insufferable social-climber with nowhere to climb has always ...
...the BARB audience of middle-class wannabes. I, however, have never gotten the joke (the jokes are far from subtle and to the point of basic reaction shots from one character to another....basically sloppy slapstick). The great traditions of British comedy such as the hidden character of Sheridan who is supposedly Hyacinth’s son make their presence felt (as it were) through the constant telephone conversations that punctuate the ‘iron ...

The Bucket Residents

Advantages: Funny charcters, funny stories
Disadvantages: None

Keeping Up Appearances is a very funny comedy. It is about a snobbish woman Hyacinth played by Patricia Routledge and her husband Richard played by Clive Swift. Hyacinth has to have everything perfect to suit her, even her name, when she married Richard, his name was Bucket and pronounced Bucket, but when they got married she changed it so it was pronounced Bouquet. People feel sorry for Richard because they don’t know how he can stand being ...
...she makes him do. Hyacinth’s sister Daisy is married to Onslow and she is the complete opposite to Hyacinth. She lives is a run down house with a broken down car in their garden and well, lets just say that Hyacinth doesn’t like to be seen round there. When she goes to visit, she gets Richard to park the car down the road so people don’t notice the car outside this house. Then if she saw them in the street she would pretend that ...

Hyacincth - a GREAT comic character

Advantages: great acting, good script and Hyacinth is a magical comedy creation
Disadvantages: none

Hyacinth Bucket is a great comic creation. Patricia Routledge is a fine actress and I'm sure she has never been better in this role. Hyacinth is a snob ...no ...she is THE SNOB. She could snob for England. She is always trying impress neighbours, the vicar, the Chairwoman of the W.I or whatever. Always trying to outdo people, but she can't really pull it off...or should I say 'orff'? Her long suffering hubby is played brilliantly by David Swift. ...
...throws at hime. Stoical, but always willing to have a joke - especially with the next door neighbours who live in fear of Hyacinth. Hyacinth also has a dark side - her sister and brother in law. Fat, scruffy - from the other side of the tracks. Often the funniest bits of the programme is when Hyacinth tries to hide them from one of her 'circle' or 'disown them'. Fine cast and great writing make this show a hit - despite, when it first came on, it ...

Oh dear

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Too many to mention

This is so BBC I'm afraid - middle class situation comedy without a hint of self parody. They actually think this is funny. If I hear Patricia Routledge correct anyone again (It's not Bucket, it's Bouquet), I may quite possible go off my head. The idea of pricking the pomposity of an inveterate snob and her attempts at social climbing might at first sight have been thought funny, but I just wish they'd had another look, because this is cosy dross ...

Its bucket humour

Advantages: Occasionally funny
Disadvantages: A rather lame atmosphere about the show

Keeping Up Appearances is a show that I enjoyed watching when I was about 5 years old - it fit in with my humour. The whole style of the show is just so immature - the jokes are rather pathetic, the acting is often dire, and the fake laughter in the background just adds to the tackiness of the show. As if that wasn't enough, I think that all of the plots follow a very same-ish and predictable outcome and the whole thing is just rather pathetic. ...

Advantages: Good characters, played by good actors who fit their characters, good one-liners
Disadvantages: Only the fact that the later episodes aren't as good

entertaining. **Final Thoughts** I recommend this programme to anyone who likes British humour/comedies. Not only is it typically British, but all the actors are well known in Britain for other pieces of their work. An enjoyable and hilarious comedy. Watch it! **Keeping Up Appearances on TV** Keeping Up Appearances can be seen on UK Gold most nights, and on BBC1 on Sunday afternoons between 12pm and 2pm. **Keeping Up Appearances on VHS and DVD** In Amazon, Keeping Up Appearances cannot be bought on DVD. But, in Woolworths, you can buy Series 1 and 2 for £18,99. On VHS from Amazon Series 1 and 2 can be bought for a mere £17,59! Certainly a bargain, and totally worth every penny!
