What Radio is For

Advantagesinformative and intelligent

Disadvantagessometimes tedious?

"...radio that the quality of BBC news is still at its best. The guests, reporters and presenters are real pros giving a varied and balanced view of the world’s affairs. International coverage is very strong on the radio, in comparison to the TV coverage. My favourite feature on PM is the digest of the letters sent in by listeners that offer excellent comments and analysis of the day’s news. After the news at six, at six thirty comes that ..." Radio 4 me

AdvantagesInteresting, informative and very entertaining.

DisadvantagesOccasionally you do need a bit of music.

"Most of my life I had listened to stations that dole out the same cheesy chart tunes, but not any more. I've seen the light (well OK heard Charlotte Green and Brian Perkins), and have converted to 'speech radio' This conversion started when I moved in with three friends acouple of years ago. We were all students, and one of us (my best friend) had been brought up on a steady dose of Radio 4. I thought R4 was totally dull and there were frequent ..." Read review

Best justification for the licence fee there is

AdvantagesInformative, interesting, funny, what more could you want

DisadvantagesNone I can think of

"...evolved out of the previous BBC home service. It has a budget of £69 million, which while tiny compared to TV, is still the highest budget of any BBC radio station, and a bargain, considering the content. It broadcasts on 92 - 95 MHz FM (95.8 MHz in central Scotland, 96 MHz in Greater Belfast, and 103-104.5 MHz in parts of Wales) and 198 kHz long wave, as well as DAB, and over the internet, so you can listen to it almost anywhere. Test Match Splendid.

Advantages

Disadvantages

"The only programme that I listen to on Radio 4 is TMS. This is because of my preference of Radio 5 Live. The TMS team however have been doing the best thing in cricket for years and I have now grown up with with a few fantastic voices. Since Channel Four took over the TV coverage, it is bliss to be able to come away from their Mickey Mouse style of coverage and come back to the traditional ready wit and humour of the TMS team. Having brought a Johnners ..." Read review

Varied and informative

AdvantagesInformative

Disadvantagesbad reception in some areas

"I only started listening to Radio 4 when I was doing some decorating, and digging the garden, but since then, I have tuned in almost every day. It seems that whenever I turn on the radio, there is something interesting on. Even if its about something I wouldn't normally be interested in, I find myself getting absorbed into it. I like to have it in the background when I'm doing the washing-up or the ironing, because it always gives you something to ..." Read review
