I have a confession. I am 23 years old and I am devoted to Radio 4. There, I have said it. Everyday I listen to Radio 4, let me guide you through my day and some of my favourite programmes. My day inevitably begins with the Today programme. This is where the nation's opinions are formed and the day's news agenda is set each and everyday. Experts, commentators and critics queue up for a chance to appear every morning. You are guaranteed a Minister or Secretary of State who will defend the government position and any number of other high profile speakers. One morning when Mrs. T was PM she ... more

Advantages Advantages Interesting, informative and very entertaining.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Occasionally you do need a bit of music.

Most of my life I had listened to stations that dole out the same cheesy chart tunes, but not any more. I've seen the light (well OK heard Charlotte Green and Brian Perkins), and have converted to 'speech radio' This conversion started when I moved in with three friends acouple of years ago. We were all students, and one of us (my best friend) had been brought up on a steady dose of Radio 4. I thought R4 was totally dull and there were frequent jibes about the stations having to change to R4 from Cheesy FM and vice versa. One day whilst cooking lunch I decided to flick on the radio and it was ... more

Advantages Advantages Informative, interesting, funny, what more could you want

Disadvantages Disadvantages None I can think of

Radio 4, is in my opinion unique amongst radio stations, it is a blend of drama, comedy, news, and documentary. I can put it on at any point of the day, and normally the program will be of interest. A little about it: For those of you so inclined, radio 4 first aired on the 30th September 1967, and had evolved out of the previous BBC home service. It has a budget of £69 million, which while tiny compared to TV, is still the highest budget of any BBC radio station, and a bargain, considering the content. It broadcasts on 92 - 95 MHz FM (95.8 MHz in central Scotland, 96 MHz in Greater Belfast ... more

The only programme that I listen to on Radio 4 is TMS. This is because of my preference of Radio 5 Live. The TMS team however have been doing the best thing in cricket for years and I have now grown up with with a few fantastic voices. Since Channel Four took over the TV coverage, it is bliss to be able to come away from their Mickey Mouse style of coverage and come back to the traditional ready wit and humour of the TMS team. Having brought a Johnners tape on the back of TMS I laughed along with the best radio moment ever when Johnathan Agnew and Johnners got the giggles over an Ian Botham ... more

    Advantages Advantages Informative

Disadvantages Disadvantages bad reception in some areas

I only started listening to Radio 4 when I was doing some decorating, and digging the garden, but since then, I have tuned in almost every day. It seems that whenever I turn on the radio, there is something interesting on. Even if its about something I wouldn't normally be interested in, I find myself getting absorbed into it. I like to have it in the background when I'm doing the washing-up or the ironing, because it always gives you something to think about. The station's news coverage is probably the best of all. Regular, hourly news: not the trivial showbiz gossip you hear on many ... more
