>> QUALITY <<:

The quality of the programmes that Radio 4 puts out really depends upon quite a few things. The documentaries are just phenomenal, an area which Radio 4 exceeds beyond expectations in this category, however the drama programmes that are played, in my opinion, are not up to scratch. The best of the bunch in this category is The Archers, which is a BBC Production, and has been home to Radio 4 since it went on air, originally on 198 Longwave.

Radio 4 is a station that is barred by Ofcom (The Office of communications) from playing music. At 12:48AM, before the shipping forecast, they play “sailing by” which is a melodic classical tune. This is the only one they can play, apart from song references in the quiz shows, and theme songs of which, are played at the start/end of programmes.

For comedy, Radio 4 is the only radio station I would choose for this category. BBC Radio 7 (A BBC National and Digital Service) plays repeats of most Radio 4 programmes later in the week. My personal favourite comedy show, is The Now show staring Steve Punt and Hugh Dennis – which airs on both Longwave, and FM on a Friday afternoon. The show contains up to date comedy about current affairs, which is recorded every Wednesday at BBC Broadcasting house.

Radio 4 has long been a programmed in station in my car, as its varied speech will not send you to sleep, nor will it drive you insane. (Unless you hate the Archers!) It has long been my want to meet the controller of the Radio 4 station at the London broadcasting house, to discuss the way to improve radio 4. Instead, you and I will be able to make suggestions to Radio 4, which will be read out Live on air every Sunday. The show is called “Feedback” and is aired at 5:30PM.

The news on BBC Radio 4 is excellent, over seven top news stories are covered at once, and even sport has its place, despite its sister station (BBC Radio 5 LIVE) Specialising in this area. Weather reports are highly accurate. Radio 4 gets its weather information from the Met office, but here’s the clever bit. On the Longwave (198) station, you will hear the shipping forecast throughout the afternoon, and on until the earl hours.

BBC Radio 4 does not broadcast 24/7 however. At 1AM the station hands its airwaves over to the BBC World service, starting with the Strand, which ends at 2AM- and programming continues into the night until 5AM, where the BBC Radio 4 early breakfast show begins.

I would describe BBC Radio 4 as a current, and educational station. They keep you up to date with finances, whilst also upholding comedy programmes, and documentaries that can include such topics as, religion, science, and technology. Also, at 12PM on every Wednesday, There is live coverage courtesy of BBC PARLIAMENT (Free view channel 81, Sky channel 504) of Prime Ministers Questions.

>> OVERALL <<:

This makes a change from music. It is great to listen to as a wind down station in the evening, or a hard talking station that keeps up with current affairs such as finance and politics. It is clearly no wonder then, why BBC Radio 4 was given the award for: “Best Station in the UK 2009”

A truly excellent station, would recommend.

When i was a young woman, i did tune into Radio 4 but life hasn't given me much chance to really enjoy radio features...crazy i know! Then, last year, whilst in Uni..yes even oldies like me return to school! :D I was required to listen to some documentaries that was in line with my study material, i became a fan once again! Sad to say, i've discontinued tuning in with one thing and another, but your lovely review of all thats good about this station, has inspired me to make the effort in listening in again, perhaps while i'm reading/rating such grand reviews as yours love :D xXx

David, a helpful rating is still a good rating! I am pleased to see you have read my review - note that i said programmes are an exception to this rule? Also it is BBC Parliament who is now providing the Audio, not Radio 4. You are right though, Radio 4 DID have PMQ's all to itself, but the audio is now coming from BBC Parliament. =)
