Don't worry, you won't need to do this, it is not part of the qualifying criteria to taking out a BHS Gold Card. Having just started as an Associate with BHS, it is one of the procedures we had to follow for our training induction course, to bring you a very high quality of service in store.
One of the main misconceptions with the Gold Card, is that it is confused with the Gold Card Credit Card. It isn't. It is a store card that enables you to spend instantly and pay of your purchases at a later date.
Let me take you through the procedures.
You will probably be asked by an Associate if you wish to take out a Gold Card. First of all you need to fit the criteria of being over 18 and yourself or a partner being in full time work. If you do, then the Associate will ask you for some basic details like your name, address, date of birth, postcode, telephone number etc. We don't need to know any other personal salary details.
The Associate will ring the Holding Bank and relay all the information to the person on the other end of the phone and they will do a credit check on the applicant/s. As long as you have not got a bad credit rating, the application will be approved and a credit limit and account number will be issued there and then. The Associate can then give you a temporary card with the account number and credit limit on it. It will be a flimsy piece of gold card that will be valid for 7-14 days as by this time your proper card will have been sent to you by the Bank. During this time, you can only use it in the store it was issued. When you get your proper card, it can be used in any Branch of BHS. Remember, it may look flimsy, but should be treated like a credit card.
You have 56 days interest free to pay off any outstanding balance. After that, you will pay 29.9% interest on any outstanding balance. You will get a 4 weekly statement and you can either use the slip to pay off your balance at the bank, or you can pay off by direct debit. Your monthly payment will be a percentage of the outstanding balance or £5 whichever is more.
Within the Gold Card, you can also continue to collect your choice points (BHS's Loyalty Points Card). Any points and discount levels reached will be automatically credited to your Gold Card upon opening your account and works as follows.
You get 1 point for every £10 spent
Collect 25 points and get 5% off future purchases Collect a further 25 points and get 10% off further purchases Collect a further 35 points and get 15% off further purchases
As a Choice Card Holder, you will also receive mailings for Choice Evenings. The Store will be open for Card Holders and will offer up to 30% off their goods, plus you still get your discount at whatever level you have reached. So, you could get 45% off your purchases. Usually one of these evenings are held before Christmas so useful for pressie hunters. During these evenings, your children are entertained and drinks nd nibbles are provided.
When you open your Gold Card Account, you will get a booklet of vouchers (usually sent with your Gold Card) and they can be for further discounts, free cup of tea or coffee in the restaurant etc. You will also receive other seasonal offers throughout the year.
One thing that I must mention is the account cover for your Gold Card. This is probably one of the most important features of all. It will cost you 1 penny for every £1 outstanding on your account ie a balance of £75 will cost you 75p to cover. This is charged monthly onto your account. If you have a nil balance then you pay nothing. So what does it cover?
**Accidental Damage**
If you buy a pair of shoes and the heel snaps off, then they will be replaced, or if you drop a lamp and it breaks into a million pieces (please don't count them) then another will be ordered for you. If you rip your coat on a gate post etc etc.
**Promotional Reductions**
How often does that happen?? You buy something like an expensive new coat or a pair of wall lights. A couple of weeks later you see the same item has been reduced in the sale. Take your receipt into customer services and you will be credited back the difference. The money will be credited back to your card and there will be a £5 charge for administration for each item you care claiming for.
**Theft of Card or theft or loss of purchases**
If on your way you leave one of your purchases on the bus, or someone pinches your shopping when you are in the cashpoint queue etc etc. These goods will be covered. If your card is stolen and any goods are bought by someone other than the cardholder then the insurance will cover the cost of the goods.
**Payment Protection**
You are suddenly ill and can't work for 5 weeks or more, or you break both legs and are off for a couple of months. Your payments will be covered for as long as you are off, or until the balance is cleared. Obviously if you are off work and your payments are being paid for you, you will not be able to put any additional purchases on your card, until you are able to start paying again.
If you do take out a Gold Card, please take out Account Cover. Some customers say that there cards are already protected, but this is not card cover, it is more specifically account cover!! Well worth it for the sake of just a few pennies.
If you are opening a Gold Card, please note that on the back of the BHS christmas brochure, you will find a £5 off coupon when spending £50 or more when you open an account.
Advantages: Easily obtainable, £500 initial limit Disadvantages: APR is extorionate
BHS stores have been around for as long as I can remember, and they have a good range of products if slightly old fashioned in places.
Like most large department stores BHS has jumped on the Store card band wagon, and now offers a BHS Gold card to its customers. When I say customers I actually mean virtually anyone who can write and fill in the application form. These application forms are not hard to find. Simply go to any BHS store and the chances ... ...I do feel here that BHS are indeed being a bit irresponsible in offering the card to anyone, I feel there should be some kind of check not just to protect BHS from a bad debt but to protect the consumer from taking on more than they can handle.
Whilst using the card you gain points which will entitle you to even more discounts, and special offers. The card is naturally accepted in all BHS stores and like all plastic comes at a price. In this case ...

Advantages: Great perks with the account cover Disadvantages: High interest rates
...but the gold card from BHS is for EVERYONE and is not based on how big your wage packet is and it is a great little card card to have as i will explain.
The application takes no time at all to fill out instore, about 2 minutes with the writing and then you have to wait about another 2 minutes whilst they are on the phone with the credit peeps. The decision is instant and they give you a temporary card to use until you shiny new gold one comes through ... ...with your gold card then BHS will refund the difference of the new lower price which is fantastic. You just have to make sure that you make your claim within the 6 week period.
*Protection against theft. If your card is stolen and the thief uses the card before you have cancelled it, then you will not have to pay for what the thief has bought using your card which gives you total peace of mind.
*Unlimited amount of tea&coffee top-ups at the coffee ...

...to other store cards, the BHS gold card is probably by far the best. THE COMPETITORS
Most store cards will offer you a £1 voucher for every £100 you spend there. Some offer a £5 voucher for this amount. Once used, you have to spend another £100 in order to get that discount again. The boots advantage card (which is not actually a store card, but more a club card) actually gives you £4 back for every £100 spent. However, the BHS gold card actually ... ...for every £10 spent at BHS and as you collect points you get to 5%, 10% and finally 15% discount level. 10 points to get to 5%, a further 25 to get 10% and finally a further 35 to get 15%. But the great thing about the Gold card is that you cant "use up" your discount. Once you have a discount level, you get that discount on anything you buy, be it £1 or £100. To be fair, it resets annually - but only to a certain extent. (e.g: 10% drops to 5%). ...

...how many times I visit BHS I nearly always come out with buying something. Now we have got to a new BHS year we start all over again.
About 3 years ago I applied for a BHS Gold card. This is really a credit card that actually gives discount on purchases throughout the store. When you buy anything and pay for the goods by this method you earn 1 point for every £10.00 spent. Once a month you receive a statement from BHS showing the different purchases ... ...you have earned 25 points your statement will show that you have a discount level of 5%. This means that you will be able to save this discount from all items bought in the store, until your next discount level is reached.
Your following statement will show the 5% discount amount and how many points you will need to reach the next level. This is 10%, which is after you earn another 25 points. The maximum level is 15%. This is reached by earning ...
