My wife and I have had our fair share of cars over the past 5 years or so - about 12 in total - and each one was very different to its predecessor. For example, we went from a Ford Escort to a Peugeot 206; a BMW Z3 to a VW Golf; from a LandRover Discovery to Porsche 911; and from a BMW 330d Sport to a Fiant Punto Mia (1.2). Most recent ly we changed from a BMW X3 to a BMW 116i Sport. If asked to choose which of all the cars we have owned I would recommend the most, I would say that depended to whom the recommendation was being made; however, if like us you have a young family and an active lifestyle, although you might imagine the versatility of a 4x4 such as the Discovery would be a good bet to get my vote, I would honestly have to say that, pound for pound, the 1 series has been the best buy by far.
Let's start with the most important consideration for anyone when looking to buy a car - price. The 116i Sport is about £17,500 on the road before you load it up with any toys or luxuires such as Sat Nav or leather seats. At the end of the day there is no point in looking for a car that sits outside your budget. However, if you are reading this and already thinking that £17,500 or there abouts for a 1 series is too expensive, hold fire a little longer before clicking off to read a review about a cheaper car instead because the main advantage of owning a 1 series is its strong residual value, especially after 2 or 3 years (which is the usual term for most fiance deals).
I have never been a great fan of car finance - for a start you usually have to haggle like stink to get the best interest rate and then there are all the extras such as income protection and gap insurance to consider. However, because of the 116i's high residual value, choosing finance could be your way to owning a car that you might never have thought possible. To the facts, at least based on my experience:-
On the road cost of vehicle - £17,770 Deposit - £2,100 Finance term - 2 years (10,000 miles per year) Monthly payment - £239 Guaranteed minimum future value - £12,400 (that's about 70%!)
Now you may be thinking that still sounds a lot, but it is worthwhile getting quotes from other manufacturers on cars in the same class, as you will soon find that even though they may cost less now, when you come to sell them on in 2, 3 or more years time they will probably be worth far less than the BMW would have been and therefore you might not be appreciably better off for having taken the chepaer option after all - in fact you may be demonstrably worse off! Now if that has whetted your appetite for more and all of a sudden that much longed for BMW badge no longer seems so far out of reach, please feel free to read on.
The sceptics among you will no doubt be muttering: yeah, but I bet his car insurance is astronomical. Well, actually, it isn't. Fully comprehensive with myself and my wife to drive (my wife is also under 25 and only passed her test 18 months ago) costs £410 per year and although we do not live in London, we are classed as living in a relatively high risk area in a city in the Midlands
From a driving perspective, the feel of a BMW sets it apart from most cars because it is rear-wheel drive. As a result it not only feels more planted on the road, but also sportier. Better still, BMW have managed to make the drive of the 1 series feel just like that of its larger cousin the 3 series and extinguished that "small car feel" as a result.
The cabin retains that sporty feel with the driver's and front passenger's seats having electric adjustable anti-roll sides. The dash is also pleasing to the eye, ergonomically and unfussily designed (and in my view better than that of the current X3 and 3 series). My only gripe would be that it also looks a touch too plastic, but then again compared to other cars in its class the 116 seems positively luxurious.
Cloth trim comes as standard but for no cost you can upgrade to sensatec, which provides a suedo partial leather effect, although the appearance is obviously not quite as plush as leather (which from memory was a whopping £1,000 option and in my view not worth the money - it probably will not matter a row of beans in a 1 series when you come to sell it on whether it has leather or not).
Fuel economy is slightly disappointing, especially as I believe that the larger 2.0 model goes further on a tank than the lesser-engined version under review. However, the purchase price differential more than makes up for this and we find that we average about 36mpg, which isn't bad.
Space in the rear of the vehicle is excellent - it comfortably seats 3 adults, although it is also the focus of my only real complaint about this car: the aperture of the rear doors when fully open. Unlike most cars the doors only seem to extend to about 45-55 degrees, meaning that if you are in the back you cannot swing your legs round, push up and exit in a straight line - you have to slant at an angle, which is not a problem for those who are fit and able-bodied but it is a real headache for my grand parents and those who are less firm on their feet. It is also a problem when wanting to put bulky items on the back seat, such as a carry cot or child seat - not so much when empty , but it is obviously a big worry when you have a sleeping baby to contend with.
Boot space is definitely a plus - there is ample room for our two labradors or pram (when collapsed).
Now, if you are considering BMW's Sat Nav, I would advise you not to. It is expensive and lacks the ease of use of other, cheaper more user-friendly systems such as Tom Tom. I must confess that we don't actually have BMW's Sat Nav in our 1 series, but we went for the full blown professional Sat Nav system in the X3 and it drove us mad! As for other gadgets, at £275 heated seats are marvellous, especially on those cold winter mornings. Bluetooth telephone is also worth considering from a safety aspect and it is also very easy to use - the controls are actually integrated into the steering wheel.
Overall the 1 series has kept us very happy so far and we can relax knowing that we will recoup a large chunk of what we paid for it after 2 years. It is as economical as we expected it to be, gives immense driving pleasure owing to its build and ride quality and, let's face it, has the added kudos of being a BMW!
...and inusrance details.
The BMW 1 Series, is BMW's 2nd attempt to create a small, hatchback car, the previous one being the 3-Series Compact, which accroding to popular opinion was definetely not one of BMW's best. My family were in the market for a new car, and my father was looking to buy a small practical city car, and had practically settled on the VW Golf 5. However when we both attended a car exhibition, I completely fell in love with the looks ... ...and lights emit the traditional BMW orange, and two small and unobtrisive orange lights situated near the reading lights give the cockpit a space age feel when one is driving at night on unlit roads. The cockpit layout and design is beautifully done as well, it is uncomparable to any other small cars interior in terms of beauty and aesthetics.
When first driving this car I was amazed, at how good it felt to drive, at the enjoyment it gave me, going ...

BMW first attempted to sell their souls to the Devil in the 1990s with the introduction of the 3-series Compact, a sort of half-arsed attempt at making a hatch-back version of their market-domineering executive saloon. The problem with the Compact was that it wasn't at all like the 3-series and just sort of shared its name. It wasn't as good as the full size 3-series to drive, either, and the interior was cheap and tacky.
BMW declared that it was ... ...future of the design of BMW cars looked bright, until Bangle came up with the 7-series.
It was a horrendous design that gave the car a fat belly, moping mouth and tearful eyes for headlights. Rather than appearing aggressive, expensive and stealth-like, the first incarnation of Bangle's 7-series looked wallowy and sad but BMW were on a steam-roller and the family resemblance quickly worked its way down the line until the aggressive BMW 3-series ...

The handeling is superb and my sport seats are adustable in a way thet they can give you a feeling of one-ness with the car .

to an Alfa 147 at 44% (£7040), an Audi A3 or BMW116i, also 58%, a Ford Focus 39% (£6240). Even a £16,000 Mercedes A Class will be worth only 52% - or £8320 - of its original value after three years and 30,000 miles use.
According to my comparative figures - all thanks to Autocar magazine - the new Civic very much sits at the top of its class in terms of depreciation.
FUEL ECONOMY 7 / 10 Ahem. There are lies, damned lies and statistics?
?It is not that the Civic is a thirsty car, indeed the 1.8 litre petrol engine has in the hands of road testers been proven to be a very economical power unit, however Honda's claims for the diesel have also proven to be so optimistic as to be lies!
My own experience of this engine is that, in the Accord, you will be at least 12mpg overall short of the claimed average fuel consumption. I ...
