I recently test drove the '120d Sport' here in the UK and my overall conclusion was of a car represented the most blatant example of charging for the badge.
The car handles very well and provides a somewhat smooth driving experience. Being a diesel engine gives that astonishing mid range torque performance. It moves effortlessly through the motorway (but do pay attention to the speed restrictions).
However I must say the build quality is no better than a car of half the price. The interior is cheap looking and the door trim gives off low amplitude noises from time to time. In addition the windows make an awful squeaking noise.
Also, the car can end up pretty expensive if you tick off too many of the option boxes. Here are some examples; it costs an extra £1,000(GBP) for leather trim, an extra £195(GBP) for the privilege of a proper lumbar support on the front seats. Now, really come on, that's been a standard on most super-minis for the past 5 years or if not 10 years! But the one I tried not to laugh was when I saw an extra £30(GBP) for a cup holder (I'm not making that up!).
Furthermore why (if anyone is able to answer) is the temperature gauge deleted from the instrument panel? The interior is cheap as it is for **** sake. Not saying the temperature gauge will make the interior substantially better but why is it not there?
More importantly to families, I recommend not to buy this car if rear seat space is of prime importance. As the rear-drive layout gives tight or less knee and leg room. The pay off without a doubt, is in the handling, which is easily the best of this class has to offer.
Finally my assumption is, they are expecting people to pay for the badge, although judging by the sales figures, it's not really working. The badge is worth nothing to me it's what the car does that matters. The price of this car I would say if they were selling it at £15K (GBP) it would be about right, $17K (GBP) would be somewhat acceptable, but in my eyes it will be never be worth £20K (GBP) or more.

...want to get back my Bmw and i would recommend it to anyone looking for a small sporty car but you should take a test drive first as it may not be i suspect for some. The performance is just as good as i expected and the comfort and features are great but as with all bmws do come with a large price. The design of the car is great but the looks can be consider as controversial, if in doubt go on bmws offical website at www.bmw.co.uk. Thanks ...

Advantages: Quick, Great Handling, fun and fuel efficient. Disadvantages: Expensive, Run Flat Tyres, rear leg and boot space.
I now own a BMW120D M-Sport and after driving alternatives such as the Audi A3, VW Golf TDI and the Focus TDCI, i came to the conclusions the BMW was perfect for my needs. Out of the three the BMW had the best handling aside from the AUDi's Quattro system which i feel lacked the poise and preciseness a rear wheel car gives you(RWD is also much more fun). The BMW had more grunt than the other cars and is nearly half a second quicker than it's nearest rival (Audi A3). The ride can be crashy on less than smooth roads due to it's Run Flat Tyres which i may add are very expensive and wear out much quicker than standard tyres. They don't add any benefit to the dynamics and handling of the car. Please note Run Flat Tyres are fitted standard. The 120D however, does lack rear space but isn't at all cramped as long as the front driver ...

Advantages: Looks great, lovely to drive, excellent build quality Disadvantages: Small rear windscreen, limited rear legroom, don't like the rear view mirror at night.
I ended up choosing the 120d M sport after testing most of the 1-series range, including the 118 and 118d SE. For me the step up in price was more than covered by the increased comfort and performance. Before you've even got in the car, the exhaust and body kit make the car look that little bit more aggresive and I like the subtle M sport badges on the door sills, steering wheel and gear stick.
The racing seats are fantastically comfortable to sit in, even on long journeys and I find it a real pleasure to drive. The gearbox is extremely smooth and fuel economy is amazing. My one comes with the stop-start technology that bmw are now introducing- if you put the gearbox in neutral at a junction etc the car engine will switch off, and then on again as soon you put your foot down on the clutch. this not only lowers carbon emissions but also ...

Advantages: Well built, rear wheel drive, excellent handling, fast, good fuel economy Disadvantages: expensive to buy and fix, run flat tyres as standard
Having had several test drives across more or less the full range of 1 Series', trying to establish which version I am likely to buy, I can honestly say that for me there is only one choice!
Whilst all are put together to the high standards we have come to expect from BMW over time, I can't help but feel that the price difference in models presents you with a bargain when looking to the 120d. The 118d is a good car in itself, but the difference in grunt received from the extra £800 of going a model up is well worth it.
Granted, the majority of what follows is not 'standard' equipment on the car, but when is it ever with BMW??
The m-tech extras are again worth the extra money, as the handling, looks and performance are so greatly refined that you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd bought a sports car.
The six speed gear box is ...
