Hiya! I live in the Rossendale Valley, in Lancashire. I'm retired, having served 28 years as, dare I say it - a police officer.

My wife and I have owned a 3 seriesBMW since 1974. The first one was a 316i (1596cc)with manual gearbox. The car was completely reliable and very well made, and the paint finish was faultless. Servicing was every 6,000 miles, although perhaps more frequent than other cars at that time, the cost of the service was as cheap, perhaps cheaper than that of other foreign cars. The second BMW we bought, in August 1997, was a 318iSE (1796cc)with automatic gearbox, again completely reliable but the paint finish was showing signs of not being as well finished off as the previous model, especially around the wheel acrches, inner boot lid bonnet etc. The servicing intervals however were longer, every 8,000 miles and again the servicing price was competative, the BMW labour costs seemingly cheaper than those of a Ford garage. In September 2001 we bought a BMW 318iSE (1995cc) - with the 'newly' designed engine, again we opted to pay the extra £1100 for the automatic gearbox, which does make the car a dream to drive. The 'feel' of this car was very much different to the previous models, giving a harder, more sportier ride. Servicing for this model has now jumped up to every 15,000. A complete service history is a 'must' for BMW cars, otherwise the 'trade in' value renders the car almost worthless, especially at a BMW dealership. The 'new' BMW, compared with our previous 2 now lacks the feeling of 'robustness', although it still feels safe and responsive, the build quality has been sacrificed in an effort to make the vehicle weigh less to boost the fuel consumption figures. The previous BM's had solid metal sills and substantial bumpers,a heavy bonnet, the new ones seem to be of a very light flimsy material, and the paint finish has deteriorated, again this can be detected in the inner boot lid, bonnet etc. We especially liked the seating material on the previous models we had, our new one has the 'sports' type material, which no doubt weighs less. All in all we do like the BMW, the service departments at the dealerships are the most modern, and the personell are trained to the highest standards in both customer and care care, they are attentive to your every concern.

Would you mind if I made a suggestion? There was a lot of information in your opinion but it was quite hard to read. Opinions which are broken up into smaller paragraphs and have a blank line between them are easier on the eye! Sue.

Advantages: Fair price, electric roof, leather interior, CD player and, of course 'blindingly rapid'. Disadvantages: Quite expensive parts, can tend to guzzle petrol depending on the speed.
