I have the 320d tourer which I love to drive. This is my second BMW (first being a saloon) and I feel this model drives just as good as a saloon, I worried about it as I had heard that estate cars can be slower and more difficult to drive.
The boot space is great, I have a double pram and find it fits well into the boot space with extra room for shopping. There is also a net to seperate the boot from the rest of the car if pets are travelling or you have loaded the boot right up for holidays.
As a woman driver I do not know any of the technical stuff, I leave that to my husband, But I feel very strongly that this is a car which rivals all others and not knowing the technical stuff has not made a difference as I so far have not needed to know. It does not act like an estate car. When you are driving it you feel like you are in a saloon care for handling and comfort. This car is a dream with loads of space, compartments and extras which come in very handy (we have the booster seats, and reverse parking sensor). If you are looking to buy this car I would highly recommend it.
For the price you pay you get a very good drive and the space you require. Ours was £15000 when it was 3 years old and we have had no problems with it at all.
A downside is the servicing can be expensive if you use the dealers. The last one we had was an oil service and cost around £200 with the dealer.
THis car handles beautifully with great control. It has loads of airbags (which can be a problem when sorting out where to put the car seats) BMW do have a wide range of accessories available including there own brand of car seats.
BMWs can loose money fast, this is why we opted for a second hand one. It had already lost the most money. But I feel we have not compromised by doing this, as we have not had any problems since purchasing.
Overall this car drives great, is comfortable, spacious enough for the kids and all their baggage. It is however on the expensive side compared to other estates but worth every penny.
Advantages: Spacious, reliable, cheap to run, beautiful Disadvantages: None!
...Hi, I have just bought a BMW320d se. I absolutely love it! Its reliable and comfortable, plenty of room for 3 kids in the back and loads of boot space. Does 45+ to the gallon and we live in a rural area so will be cheaper on motorways and A roads. Tax is also cheap due to emmissions. I have honestly got nothing bad to say about the car! 6 speed is excellent for motorways so is the cruise control. Cruise control is also handy to make sure you don't go over any speed limits because it's easy to go faster than you think you are in the BMW. The ride is really smooth so you don't even know you are in a diesel. It also has rear parking sensors that are handy in car parks etc. You will be surprised at the price too, you can get this top of the range car for the same price as a Ford Mondeo or Vauxhall Vectra and I know which I would rather be...

Advantages: Stylish, and efficent Disadvantages: better engine coming soon
...I have now owned my 320D SE 05 plate BMW for just over 2 years and I must say i am very very happy, I do apporx 35,000 miles per year and the drive, comfort, fuel efficency and build quality are second to none, the style is very attractive and differs from the old 3 series dramatically. I get approx 48 mile per gallon which for this type of car is very impressive. I know BMW are now working on the revamped diesel engine which gives even more fuel efficency and even better miles per gallon, there is also an advantage with the new engine on CO2 levels for company drivers as this is set to be around 131 which based on the current model would save a typical 22% tax payer a good amount of money....

Advantages: Responsive, firm drive. Reliable. Good Customer Service at dealers. Disadvantages: Extras are expensive. Boot space is small. Residuals are low given prestige label.
...I bought a 320d M Sport in September 2006. This is a great car to driive, quick, responsive and fun. Everything I would expect of the BMW marque.
Whilst it drives beautifully, as with any BMW extras are expensive and surprisingly the boot space is tiny. Don't expect to get much luggage in there.
Additionally, the residuals are not good on the 3 series. I bought new and have been offered 11k less than I bought it for recently. There are loads of these cars on the second hand market and next time I would by a used car with low mileage to save myself the anxiety of losing a packet.
Having said that I love this car and would recommend you buy it - at the right price. It doesn't get better at this price....
