It`s mileage was 149,000 which might appear high to some but not for a BMW.A car of this age is bound to have some marks on it but mine has only a few very minor ones and the excellent condition that it`s in indicates the obvious that BMW paintwork is quality and will last almost unblemished with a little care. The insurance is middling in price not the best or worse but it can depend on the individuals age, experience, location and the old no claims bonus! Mine was just under £600 with 0 no claims, fully comprehensive and living in London which incidently was cheaper than my C reg 3 series!
I cant fault the performance, mine is automatic so it wont burn everything in sight off the lights and I dont want it to but after a slightly sluggish pullaway from the lights it picks up and comes into it`s own with smooth, quiet power from the 2 litre 6 cylinder engine and cruises lovely at high speed. You need to look for service history when buying to ensure the engine is likely to last, mine didnt have full history but enough recent history of looking after to make it worth taking a small risk and i`m glad I did.A couple of minor glitches are the only things I could class as a disadvantage and they were fuel consumption but once your through the gearbox mines still sits at 110 MPH and the fuel consumption meter shows 20 to the gallon so I shouldnt moan really and the other thing was the fact that the cars handling was solid but felt a little heavy at times, then again i`ve only noticed that flying round some of the curves on the A1m at over 90 MPH and its a heavy car anyway so maybe thats not a fault at all.
Everything about the car is comfortable, the ABS braking took a little getting used to because i`d never driven one before and the 6 cylinder engine apparently is good for twice the mileage of most 4 cylinder cars with regular care and servicing.
Even without all the special equipment the car has a lot of nice features, intermittent wipers that stop when your stationary or in very slow traffic and speed up again when the car does! I dont miss the lack of air conditioning and I like the 3 different adjustments on seat position. My particular model has electric windows and sunroof-very reliable with the drivers cut off switch to stop kids in the back playing with the windows and falling out! The heater is excellent with the 2 seperate temperature controls for driver and passenger.the fold-down armrests on the front seats and the centre back seat are really comfortable too.
In conclusion I would say you cant go wrong buying this car if you can afford to buy and run it.Its such a comfortable car and so easy to drive and with all the stress on the roads today that`s a major plus,it`s fast when needed and fairly economical at moderate speeds-I love it!
Advantages: Very smooth, fast motorway cruiser with excellent build quality Disadvantages: Heavy on fuel, lack of internal storage space
I hadn't thought of BMW before but that changed one wet Monday when with a screech of tortured rubber, the back end of my elderly but serviceable Volvo 240 was forcibly rearranged by someone with only a passing knowledge of wet braking conditions.
Needing an estate for work, I asked my friendly motor trade contact to sort something out. He suggested a 5 series touring. And why not I thought...
So, a while later, a rather nice K reg turns up - I ... ...a BMW owner - although this one does seem to be fitted with the indicators that judging from the behaviour of many owners, must surely be optional!
It's the E34 model, so a few years old but doesn't look at all dated. It gives the right impression when turning up anywhere on business and although it's done nearly 100k miles, there's no rust.
It's got the M50 engine - what does that mean? It means 6 cylinders of smoothness, it means scorching motorway ...

Advantages: Well built. Lasts well Great 6 cyl engine. Classic design. Disadvantages: Suspension wear. Suspension noise from rear. Economy & insurance
Have owned it for 5 years. It is 15 years old now. Got through it's National Car Test the other day, apart from some rear bulbs that had gone. The 5 series has pretty much set the standard for executive cars since the late 80's. Though I'm sure Mercedes are trying hard with their E class.
I've been very pleased with mine overall. I'll definitely buy another BMW. The car, despite it's advanced age, still does everything well. They are built to last. ... ...been expensive but that's a complaint shared by most Irish motorists (am 35, clean license & no incidents).
The 6 cylinder engine is wonderfully smooth and sounds great. I'm not into speed, but it has 150bhp. 4 valves a cylinder. Fuel economy is not good, but I don't drive around town much. The car is heavy at 1500 kg. I'm sure a three series feels more nimble.
Steering and handling are just right. Manual gearbox is very good. I've few gadgets ...

...to say i own a bmw - there is no other car i have ever owned that has given so much pleasure. Now, you may think i am just saying that but truth is i have owned many cars in the past - bmw is the best yet , and my advice would be to choose one carefully for years of pleasurable motoring.
the 520i se is a good choice - it offers high spec and reasonalbe performace and handling. it is not a hot hatch of course - but more of a "king of the road" - ... ...stressless even after a long journey.
GO for one that has a history of course - full history of service and owner etc. But, here's the tip - don't be put off by high miles - you will get a bargain and the car will still perform as well as a car with half the miles or less.
The 5 series is worthy of title to one of the best all round cars on the road - keep it for 5 years or so, then get rid.
I will always buy bmw. ...

Advantages: fast, sexy and sleek Disadvantages: air conditioning package is a must
...I have ever owned. BMW is sporting looking, practical and you can fit that shopping in the boot for the married persons amoungst you. At first, I had the old 5 series which to be humble, looks like a OAP motor. The thing they forgot to tell me that with the 6 cyl under the bonnet, it goes like a ferrari.
The new 5 series handles great and sit nicely on the autobahn at 220 km/h without even having to try. Kick it down into sports mode on the auto ... ...that little extra on Air conditioning. If you are after, style, ecconomy, a safe feeling, and a large boot - this is a must. Insurance costs are minimal for the performance you actually get. Once you have owned a BMW (whichever model) you will never look back!! ...

Advantages: Looks amazing, Powerful for a 2.2, Pretty Quick Disadvantages: Prices have just gone up.
All I can say is amazing. I borrowed one of a rich uncle for a few months and it was such a dream. The styling on this new one is beautiful. I know some of you don't like it but I can't get enough of it! Most people won't know this but its actually not a 2.0 litre as its badged but its a 2.2 litre. Giving more power and is surprisingly quick for its size. Its alot bigger than the older one and is soo much better. Plenty of room for 5 inside and very ... ...it has been updated from the previous 7 series and works alot better but it has a problem. If the outside temperature drops below -3C you then have a problem. The iDrive tends to crash when it gets colder than this and it will and has done.
Safety is very good in this version. The old 5 had what I can describe has a awful alarm, that was so quiet a cat's miaow is louder. Also if some twocers fancy your amazing stereo system that comes with it all ...

Advantages: Very Nice Car Disadvantages: Tempting to overspeed?
I compared many new cars such as the Honda Accord 2.4, Toyota Camry 2.4, Citroen Picasso, Sanyong Rexton 2.7 xdi, Peugeot 307SW, Peugeot 407and Mazda 6, etc.
I was not really satisfied with most of them except for the Peugeot 407 which I really liked a lot but lacking room space in the rear and engine grunt too!
Months later, I saw some used BMW 5 series and Mercedes E series. I was very close to purchasing a BMW 523 which I chose over BMW520 and the smaller BMW 328 until I saw a beautiful black Mercedes E230 Advantgarde with genuine blue glass windows. I was impressed by its gracefulness and smoothness. Of course the BMW 523 had a better engine response and a terrific grunt as well but was less roomy than the Mercedes.
I was still unsure for about a week and then I saw a couple of Mercedes E 240 and E280 over the following ...

Advantages: very cheap to buy, lots of car for the money Disadvantages: niggly faults due to age
I bought this from a forecourt in Easter 03 for the princely sum of £3000. The similar age BMW520 would've cost £7,000 so I thought I was getting a bargain. Leather seats, CD, remote locking, airbags, alloys, sunroof etc.
Over the past 18 months all is well, the 2.3 engine is very quick next to 1.8 Vectras and the like, and the mpg is pretty respectable when you drive sensibly, but why buy a 2.3 to drive slowly?
The worst thing is the bits that are going wrong, the electric windows jam, and the stereo mutes itself whenver a mobile phone is within 50 yards of the car. Small things in context, but really frustrating.
On overall balance though, I think the 600 is better looking than the equivalent mondeo or vectra, although nowhere near as prestige as an Alfa Romeo or 523 BMW. ...

Advantages: Low cost, comfertable, and high spec alternative. Disadvantages: Poor depreciation, and unjustly poor street cred.
car and get a comfy ride, and well, you can't own a company car that doesn't look like every other car you pass on the motorway.
Step up the Daewoo Leganza. I own one, I am 23 (not a fogey) and I am very suprised with it, Still - 3 years on. Why? I'll tell you. When I was looking at purchasing a car, I had roughly £16k to spend. Now, I WANTED a second hand BMW520. I WANTED a Toyota Celica. Why did I not purchase one of these vehicles you ask? well, there are many reasons, here are just a few:
BMW: The only BMW's that came into my price range, were 2-4 years old, with N O T H I N G ! a tape player, rubbish allows, sandpaper seats, and all in all, a tacky affair. Being such a fan of BMW's, it actually hurts me to say that.
TOYOTA: Mmmm, I was 20, a 2.0 Litre Celica would have set me back approx £2,500 in the insurance dept. No ...
