There are two kinds of people in the World; Those who do the work, and those who take the credit. Try to be in the first group, this is less competition there.

I have recently discovered that the BMW 5 series has been voted 'executive car of the year 2006' by 'what car?' magazine, and having owned a BMW 525i for the past two years this does not come as any surprise.
I opted for the metallic grey and overall have found this to be a great choice. The exterior of the car looks classy and dignified. I also feel that the car manages to fulfill the role of being a great family car, whilst also feeling a bit more 'sporty' when you want it to.
As I have owned a 3 series in the past, when I opted for the BMW5 series I was fully aware of the many 'extras' and 'additional' costs that seem to occur. I was also too familiar with the high service costs charged by BMW in comparison to some other garages. I feel these are two points worth pointing out to anyone who is considering purchasing a BMW.
This unfortunatly brings me on to the areas of the BMW 525i experiance that I have found to be negative. Whilst I think the I drive and computer systems in the car are great, I also can't seem to remember an occassion when the car has not been 'bleeping' at me to remind me of something that needs doing (or shouting at me as I like to call it). It's favourties are:
Low Fuel (which seems to be 30 minutes after I have just filled up).
Service Needed
Vehicle check needed
etc etc
I have also had (or should I say still have) a problem with the air bag light. Since about a month after purchasing the car I have had problems with the airbag light lighting up. I have found this concering as I want to be sure that all airbags are working correctly, and not having to worry about what would happen if we actually had an accident. Over the past two year the car has been into BMW to 'fix' this problem over a dozen times, and whilst we have never been charged for this service, I would still expect the airbag warning light to remain unlit. The longest we have lastet so far is one month.
Another drawback to the BMW 525i is the high fuel consumption. It seems to be that between the ever increasing fuel costs and the way the car likes to drink petrol, it is costing me a fortune. For example, yesterday afternoon I have 17 miles of fuel left, so I went into a garage and put £10 worth of petrol in my miles remaining rose to a grand total of 68 miles.
I really must move onto the better points of what I think is a great car. We opted to have park distance control as an opptional extra, and I have found this to be a well worth the money extra.
The satellite navingation system we had fitted was not a BMW system but was supplied by a different company. On reflection, I feel the BMW system would have been worth the extra money and is the one we should have purchased to fit in the car.
The interior of the car feels spacious and comortable and easily fits 5 people with room to spare. The car also has great boot space which is ideal if you are using the car for family use.
The best place to drive the BMW 525i is on a motorway. This is when the BMW is at its best. It may not be the best drive in the world when driving through country lanes, but the drive on the open road more than makes up for it.
The BMW 525i is great to handle and glides through each of it's 6 gears. For long journeys up and down the motorway I would recommend this car before any other.
The accelaration and braking of the car is superb. We opted for the leather interior, and it is well worth the money. It definatly helps to finish off the executive high class feel of the car. This exectutive feel is added to by the great customer service. The BMW team our second to none when it comes to aftercare, an nothing seems to be too much.
In conclusion I would definatly recommend this car, and it is well worth the money. If you want to feel great every time you sit in the drivers seat, this car is for you.

I would get the engine managment system checked if I were you. from what your saying the fuel consumption would be somewhere around 22 - 25 mpg. A 6 speed manual 525 should be doing nearer to 28 - 30 mpg. If you think the iDrive system is bad in your car, try the one in a 7 series.
