We have recently bought a second-hand BMW 540i as an upgrade to a 325i convertible, and the difference is huge! The convertible was a fun, nippy, sporty car, while the 540 is a serious motor. It is an incredibly smooth drive, sleek and quiet, and although it is bigger than anything else I have driven, has a wider turning circle than other cars, and can be a tight squeeze in London traffic, it is an absolute joy to drive... especially on the motorway! With 8 airbags and 14 speakers, you feel comfortable and pampered both as a driver and a passenger, and there is loads of legroom. One of the best cars on the road today. It has a relatively high fuel consumption, but let's face it - you don't choose a car like this for reasons of economy!

It's a lovely car without doubt, but I find the straight six 5 series a nicer car to drive. The V8 has lots of grunt granted, but the 6 cylinder cars have the more precise rack and pinion steering and handle better as the car is not as nose heavy as it is with the V8 under the bonnet.
