Several incarnations later..we have the new mini. Now its engineered in Germany, but still built in Britain. The funny thing about a little mini cooper convertible its fun for so many other reasons than other cars I have driven. No it doesn't have 500 bhp, and no it doesn't go 0 to 60 mph in under 4s...but its still fun to drive, it is one of the most engineered, well thought-out convertibles I have ever seen. But first let's "pop the hood" as they say and investigate that very willing small powerplant. Under the bonnet it has a very technologically advanced engine, it didn't used to be that way back in the good old days, in those days when you got pulled over by the Police, they would carry extra spark-plugs, and maybe bulbs to help you change them. Now it has 115 hp and I could probably rattle-off a bunch of other numbers and stats, but to me its about the way the car gives the driver ( me ) an experience. With the top down on this car, cruising out on a mountain road, I could push the car beyond its adhesion limits, even beyond its braking limits and toss into the corners and pull it right back. Awesome ! The thing about other fast convertibles I've driven sure they have lots of power, but you haven't to be 1) so focussed and 2) so in control all the time you really cannot enjoy the ride., whereas with this Mini Cooper convertible it blends those two things (earlier points 1 and 2 ) beautifully...its not overbearing, but still on the top of the my fun to drive list...
When the first mini was re-introduced I have to confess at first I wasn't the biggest fan. But over time it has grown on me...the aesthetics and of course the driving pleasure you get from being behind this wheel. The thing that has grown on me is this....I love retro cars...this car has everything going for it...it is the new incarnation of a very classic car...just from the lines you see that original car. The great thing about the design of this car is that they took the original and re-styled it, but they kept the same feeling, they kept the same emotions, this car is a great styling icon. Why would Ferrari want one if it wasn't a great car ? I love the way BMW Rover and Co have put this car back together again. Granted it is bigger than the original mini model was and it does have some changes in the body style..but if you look at an old mini from the 1960s and look at mini from 2007, 2008 onwards you can still see they came from the same heritage. Each time I check-out a new car, I have to do this test...can you really fit a full size adult in the backseat ? I have to tell you at 5ft9 and 200 something lbs I do fit, its comfortable, I have legroom..its a nice enough back seat, lean back and let the driver drive and enjoy the scenery as we go down the road. That's one of the good things about the new mini, its definitely made for 4 people to sit inside them, and everything is laid out pretty nicely...a thumbs up ! When I kicked the driver out of the front seat and jumped into it for myself, I can verify that at my height if you need the legroom its there for you...surprisingly its actually a very comfortable car, it feels bigger on the inside than it really is. On the inside I love...alot of the little attributes like the world's largest speedometer...I mean it looks like a plate, a serving tray, and I like the gauges and how the toggle switches are protected it kinda brings that old mini into a new mini feel. Further it has a great driving position, lots of visibility with the top up or down. The new mini is really a great car !
This is my wife's car which we took delivery of in Septemer. I commented to the sales man that this is what Rover should have done years ago - having owned 3 mini's in my youth. Interestingly he said that the car was in design prior to the German parent's asset stripping exercise - oops maybe that last bit was my opinion. So if this is the case - well done to the Rover design team - you deserve some praise. Let's hope you can apply some of this genius ... ...oft described as a tardis, this new version is an exception to the rule. Don't take any cats into the back with you, in fact don't expect adults to sit in the back unless they are suffering from some sort of leg wasting disease. The front seats need to be pushed back too far for any legroom in the back - which is fine if your children are under 6 and still in the chair back kicking phase.
Secondly, you could go food shopping with this car, assuming ...

Advantages: fantastic driving experience, wonderful short-shift from the gear-box leaves you feeling exhilarated, and serious cool factor with the roof down - in short, fun fun fun!!! Disadvantages: shocking rear view visibility - make good use of the rear sensor and ensure your music is turned DOWN when you're reversing - you'll need it - also water pours into the car and onto your legs if you open the doors when the roof is wet.
I bought my MINI Cooper Convertible 10 months ago during the early, long hot days or last summer. I was lucky enought to be offered an on-order demo car which matched my requirements without me having to make the mind-boggling million and one decisions about specification! I chose the Pepper White (cream) with a black converbile roof - it comes with Chilli Pack, chrome pack, runflat tyres etc and is one of the best purchases I have ever made.
Firstly ... ...If you're an exhibitionist, the MINI convertible is for you - never have I received so many admiring glances, people waving at me - one chap even took a photo of me and my friend sitting smiling at a set of traffic lights one wonderful day! The car drives beautifully - the gear box shifts neatly and quickly (although can be tricky in 2nd gear..), the steering does exactly what you ask it to do, the seats cradle you perfectly and the ride is firm ...

Advantages: Looks and style Disadvantages: Price and drive
...are my opinions on my Mini Cooper Convertible I love the look of the Mini it is stylish and a real girls car, yet upon ordering I realised that a lot of the extras on a Mini are exactly that extras at an extra cost and by the time you have added a few items the price has increased dramatically The drive of the Mini is not as nice or nippy as I expected, it is fine to drive on normal roads but as soon as you are on a motorway at anything over 50/60mph ... ...& sluggish Also being a convertible may add to the reasons that it is very loud whendriving on the motorway I have had many problems with the gear stick which doesnt seem of the best quality and has a tendency to stick and getting into reverse is sometimes a struggle Overall it looks great but for the money a better quality and smoother drive is expected ...

Advantages: COMPACT SPORTS CAR WITH BACK SEATS Disadvantages: NOT MUCH LEGROOM IN BACK. VERY SMALL BOOT
Just got new Mini Cooper S. LOVE IT!
Lovely looking car with top on or off. The Chilli pack gives loads of extras and is good value for money. I also think it is worth having the chrome package but that is a personal matter.
Fuel consumption isn't bad at about 25 mpg considering the performance. Fitted with a 6 speed gearbox which takes a bit of getting used to.
Back seats are only any use for children but that suits me fine. Boot isn't over generous ... ...well as it is a nightmare to fit and remove. Can't be used when back seats are occupied in any case.
Parking is doddle especially with parking sensor which is fitted as standard.
No where convenient to put mobile phone which I consider a plus point as I would like to see phones completely ABOLISHED from moving cars. ...

Advantages: looks great, same cutesy appeal as rest of range Disadvantages: little boot spae
The MINI Cooper Convertible is fitted with same four cylinder 1.6 litre engine that is shared by the rest of the MINI range. It produces 115 bhp @ 6000 rpm and delivers 150 Nm of torque at 4500 rpm.
The convertible weighs in at an extra 100 kg's than the hatchback model, which takes into account the chassis reinforcements and the electrically operated roof. The extra weight does have some bearing on performance, for example the 0-62 mph figure for ... ...of your life, then the MINI Convertible will probably be wasted on you. For us a convertible is all about finding a great road and soaking up the environment. It is about driving home with the roof down after a stressful day at work, it is about enjoying yourself, it is not about racing off at the traffic lights. You can of course opt for the supercharged Cooper S Convertible and shave 2.4 seconds off the standard Cooper's 0-62 mph time.
As you ...

Advantages: Cool (Less is more) Disadvantages: Curb damage on the wheels
My wife and I bought our mini one convertible in June05. When we purchased it we liked the look of the minicooper S convertible but couldn't quite come to terms with parting with all that cash so we opted for the cheapest option. We ordered a red mini one convertible with 17" S alloys, pepper pack, cd player and sports seats with black fabric. Oh, we also asked that the one badge be removed from the boot of the car. When it arrived we were so pleased because it was parked next to a red cooper S and it didn't look that much different apart from the obvious like the exhaust, and the air intake etc. Even the salesman was surprised as he had not seen a mini one with that spec (or so he said). Anyway since we have had our mini for 3 months there have been many fights over who was going to take it to work. Although its the bottom ...
