So what about the 1150? Waiting lists are long and dealerships are really busy at the moment - is it worth the wait? I have to say no! Sure the new linked brakes offer fantastic stopping power (touch the rear brake pedal and electronics apply front brake automatically). Ok the 6th gear and extra 5hp knocks a few revs off when cruising down the motorway...
But overall, the differences aren't massive. My advice? Get an 1100RT now and enjoy it until the 1150's are more available!

So the new 1150 RT is out, with many similarities but some big differences to the 1100. I've got a 2000 RT and have tested the 1150 and confess to being impressed, but not overly. Not enough to warrant a trade in for sure!
The 1100 is a great bike and should not be under-estimated. It certainly keeps up well enough with the sporty 600s upto 110mph and is guaranteed to leave you feeling less ruffled, dryer, warmer and a lot more smug than the sports bike riders.

Advantages: Weather protection, comfort, handling, fuel range etc. Disadvantages: Poor headlamp, people think you are too old for bikes when you buy a BMW
The BMW R1100RT is by far the BEST moorcycle for someone who likes touring at high (or low) speeds, and who likes to cover large distances at the same time. I have been riding for 37 years and have riden every type of machine there are. I feel the bMW is the best machine I have ever owned (up to now) I like the comfort. The weather protection, The handling, and the performance. On paper it isn't that quick, and to be fair it isn't, but we all know ... ...(with a good rider) give most sport bike riders a run for their money. But when they are getting off to renew their circulation and filling up with fuel, you will be flying past, leaving them in your wake. Typically 200-250 miles without stopping is easy to achieve.
Load space is superb too. With the panniers off the bike, you still have acres of room under the seat and a glove box in the fairing that will swallow so much you won't believe it. To ...

Advantages: Comfort, handling, its a Beemer Disadvantages: Its a beemer, running cost , silly design faults, headlight.
I purchased my RT in Jan 1998 new for £11,000. Being 6ft 4in and 18 stone it really was the only option for a daily commute of 120 miles. For the first year I commuted daily but now only commute about two to three times a week. My overall impression is that the bike is excellent, very comfortable easy to ride and actually very easy through traffic. Fuel consumption is good about 40mpg or 210 miles on a tank to the reserve light. The gearbox at times ... ...smooth.On a normal run fourth and fifth are quite close so a sixth for the motorway would be good.
The only complaints I would level at the bike is the runing cost, service every 6000 miles comes in at about £400 which does not include tyres. The bike came with Metzlers(?) but has since gone onto Bridgestones which give better mileage and handling. I now get about 8,000 miles on a set which cost about £200. I had a number of electrical faults, which ...

Quick review of BMW R1100RT
Eats up the miles effortlessly, sips fuel 360 km per tank and that's not hanging about, handles like a bike half it's weight. All adjustable seat, gear change and windscreen. If you are serious about doing the miles it's a no brainer: R1100RT . ...

Advantages: Does not draw attention to itself; it just plain works. Disadvantages: Inexpensive to buy - so it snags you in, expensive to keep in top trim.
...I have always wanted a BMW Airhead. Don't know why, but I held off until last year - and good thing that I did. Had I purchased a BMW first, I would not had anything to compare it against - nor would I have been wise enough to accomodate its flaws.
Flaws? Yes - but like that special mole on a lover's butt, what wonderful flaws indeed. The R1100RT will be remembered as a special bike - as the R100RT was, but not the R1150RT or perhaps the present ... ...and twisties, but the gear box is "old school" and needs skill to work. The sweet spots are many, but the weird spots are there too. Solo, in cool / cold weather, wearing fine gear, doing 140 kms on a clear back road, few bikes are finer. Biggest advice: Be smooth first, then be fast. Above all, learn how to set your own valves, change oil / fluids often, fiddle with suspension adjustments, and practice riding - don't just ride. This bike is a gift ...
