Advantages Weather protection, comfort, handling, fuel range etc.
Disadvantages Poor headlamp, people think you are too old for bikes when you buy a BMW
The BMW R1100RT is by far the BEST moorcycle for someone who likes touring at high (or low) speeds, and who likes to cover large distances at the same time. I have been riding for 37 years and have riden every type of machine there are. I feel the bMW is the best machine I have ever owned (up to now) I like the comfort. The weather protection, The handling, and the performance. On paper it isn't that quick, and to be fair it isn't, but we all know that figures are not true to life. This bike will (with a good rider) give most sport bike riders a run for their money. But when they are getting off to renew their circulation and filling up with fuel, you will be flying past, leaving them in your wake. Typically 200-250 miles without stopping is easy to achieve.
Load space is superb too. With the panniers off the bike, you still have acres of room under the seat and a glove box in the fairing that will swallow so much you won't believe it. To give you some idea some people put car type radio cassette players in that box. It's massive.
I love the bike and cannot see me replacing it for many years yet.
Servicing is very very easy and can be achieved by any mechanic. It is NOT a difficult bike to work on. I have worked on many bikes in the time I have been riding, and I must say this bike holds no terrors. There is a brilliant internet set up for info and tips for maintaining these bikes so no problems there.
Faults. Well the headlamp is not brilliant, but most people fit riding lamps which cure the problem. Some people worry their heads off about the gearchange, but it is an aguired taste which with practice you will get. The brakes are ABS and they are good, but could be better. But if you ride this bike you will probably find your riding will improve so much because of the excellent riding position that you will be able to look a long way ahead and make decisions easier, thus reducing the amount of braking that you will eventually require, so the braking thing is no longer an issue.
All of this may sound far fetched, but just stop and ask anybody who has done more than 10,000 miles on their R1100 and you will get very similar views.
Overall a first class bike in all areas for the sort of rider that thinks that a run up to the local coffee shop on a sunday morning is a waste of valuable riding time, and a ride cannot be called a long ride until it is measured in four figures.
