BMW R1200 GS

The term 'modern classic' may be an overused term, perhaps not quite on the scale of 'genius' however, by any standards BMW's R1200GS surely falls within this category. BMW have been building bikes for over 70 years - you'd think they just about got it right but every now and again they ... Read review

Modern Classic Motorcycle

Advantages: Nimble, quick and forgiving handling
Disadvantages: Heavy, expensive and less than adequate toolkit

...this category.

BMW have been building bikes for over 70 years - you'd think they just about got it right but every now and again they pull something out of the hat where the sum of the parts are very much greater than the whole.

Until Messrs Boorman and McGregor did their 'Long Way Round' trip, BMW were probably best known (in the non-motorcycling world) for making big expensive touring bikes - either owned by middle ...

My previous BMW was a ten year old R1100R - whilst it had a lower saddle, the geometry of the steering head and the steering damper made this quite difficult to push backwards and forwards in confined spaces such as a garage. (It only really felt safe if you were sitting astride the bike)

The lighter weight, wider handle bars and new steering geometry means that the GS can be pushed and shoved whilst standing alongside ... more

An incredibly capable bike

Advantages: Handles, goes and stops superbly, good quality, and BMW aftersales is great
Disadvantages: Gearbox is unrefined, though not a major issue. Too many gadgets to go wrong

...old workhorse R1150GS. Since then BMW have improved it marginally each year, and now the latest 2008 models offer in incredible array of accessories, from heated grips, electronic suspension adjustment from the flick of a switch, all sorts of luggage options, and satelite navigation and ABS, to name a few! I own a 2005 model, and absolutely adore it. The front telelever suspension takes some getting used to as there's not as much feel as you'd find ...
...and offers great offroading capabilities. BMW also have just about the best aftersales package that you can get on a bike, so you're well covered should anything go wrong. They also love to give test rides, so if you're considering it, go and have a try. You might get hooked though, so don't say I didn't warn you! ...

Fondly remembered, like my first girlfriend

Advantages: cheap, reliable, basic bike
Disadvantages: nearly useless brakes

surrounding Edinburgh - something I wouldn't even dare do with my BMW R1200GS! I even used it as a tourer - going to the Scottish Borders and the Western Isles on a couple of occasions - with full camping kit! The bike comes a very close second in my 'all time favourite bikes' only just beaten by the CB250RS I bought immediately after passing my motorcycle test, unfortunately they just don't make machines like this any more. Would I speak so fondly of an identical machine in 2008? - Probably not! But then again my personal circumstances are quite different. I'm just sorry for novice riders that you just don't get bikes like this any more. ...

Strangely normal bike for BMW - well almost

Advantages: Well behaved, if slightly underwhelmeing but that could just be me!
Disadvantages: Possibly a tad expensive and not a REAL beemer in some ways

At first glance, you could easily mistake the BMW F800ST for a 'bog standard' Japanese sports tourer, but closer inspection soon revels this to be as quirky a machine as any from the BMW fleet. One of the best (and possibly worst) things about BMW bikes are that they don't slavishly follow convention, and the F800ST follows the trend of 'tried and tested' designs with a few off the wall ideas. The results are ultimately interesting, but whether they live up to the strapline of 'ultimate riding machine' is largely a matter of personal preference. I had occasion to test ride a 2007 model F800ST when my R1200GS (reviewed previously on Ciao) was getting its' 500 mile service. I only rode around 25 miles, but this was over a range of roads, so I pretty soon got a feel for what it was about. First things first. The model number ...
