BMW has come up with a new categorization in this auto market of seemingly uncategorizable cars. They call their entry into the SUV market a Sport Activity Vehicle (I call these car-like SUV’s). Unlike a truck based SUV, X5 is more like an overgrown sedan on steroids. And, as such, it has both the characteristics of an SUV and the popular BMW sport sedans.
This works for me, as I am a driver rather than a rider. I like dancing through the curves and bashing the gas pedal on a straightaway. You could, of course, do the same in a regular SUV but you would soon notice that you are riding alfresco in an emergency wheel chair.
With its stiff suspension, but not so stiff that it rides like a sports car, X5 is possibly the best handling SUV I have ever driven. Its 50-50 weight ratio, and the fact that power is distributed electronicly among the front and rear wheels (62/38 I think) contribute to the fact that this SUV handles much like a sports sedan.
You can shine copper but its still not going to be worth as much as gold. X5 can’t compete with sports cars, or even sport sedans. It’s still a big car, so I wouldn’t buy it expecting zig zag performance around the curves.
Moreover, its also not an off-roader. With 99% SUV’s never getting off asphault, that is not a problem. But to a buyer these two qualities should mean one thing – X5 neither excels in being a sports sedan nor a heavy duty off-roader.
I wouldn’t buy an SUV unless I needed one. And if I needed one, I wouldn’t buy one that handles like a truck. So to me X5 is an alternative to uncontrollable unsafe SUVS, but can’t compare with, lets say, an M3.
Enough philosophy. Traction Control, Dynamic Stability Control, Hill Descent Control, and a buncha other (Wife?) Controls are some of the goodies that come with this car. Hill Descent Control is a gimmick that allows for smooth engine breaks that passionate drivers like me effusively perform on a manual tranny. Most trucks and 18 wheelers need this kind of technology, and its nice to have on your SUV.
I had the pleasure of driving the 3.0I, with automatic wipers and tinted glass standard. The 225 HP engine was more than enough for an SUV, but I couldn’t help but yearn for more. The two engines that this baby can have under the hood are things to bloviate about. 4.4L 8cyl with boasts 282 HP and a 3.0L 6cyl with 225 HP.
You aren’t going to win any drag races, but the 282HP is definitely going to keep you entertained when you gun it. 225HP I drove? Well, it sucked, but its more than enough for an SUV. The HP gain on the 4.4L X5 does not come cheap, unfortunately. For starters, it’s a 10k in price difference. That is a lot to pay for 60Hp, but the X5 does come with additional standard goodies like chrome wheels and some other useless jumbo.
In any event, if I were in the market for an SUV and had the financial resources for it, I would definitely opt for the 8 cyl X5. It’s an SUV for a driver who simply needs to buy an SUV. Hardly an alternative for your Sunday ride, but it’s the crème de la crème compared to other SUV’s.
Advantages: comfortable, stylish Disadvantages: expensive to buy and expensive to run
Driving the x5 is a fantastic driving experience, with good all round vision. It is comfortable and full of useful gadgets, which make the whole experience a pleasure. Before buying such a car one should always take into consideration the hidden costs, petrol, tax, extras (tow bars etc) and the possible stealth taxes form local authorities for parking. The x5 is a fantastic car but is a luxury that can cost more and more. The one downside of the ... ...a big car the boot size is tiny. When going on holiday (camping) it was essential to have a roof box as well.
The car maintains it's value well but it is becoming harder to sell second hand gas guzzlers.
I love the X5 but would advise anyone thinking of buying it to consider all things mentioned, yes you will enjoy the car but you may be left with very little in your bank account.
This car is a 4x4 but not designed to off road. However one winter ...

...the 4.8 this spring, the bmw x5 is going to be the best selling car this year. i cannot wait till i pass my driving test and get this car. it has ABS braking system, hill decent control, tv, GPS Sat Nav, a ps2 in the back with optional dvd player (in my opinion go with the ps2 instead of the dvd player as you can play dvds on the ps2). it also has built in memory so you can store such things as temperature in the car, when to start de icing the windows ... ...send this to the nearest bmw factory and they make the car according to youe specifications. this takes 2 weeks and then the car showroom tell you your car is ready and come and take it. i am not sure if you have to pay for it before they send the deatils or after you have the car. the CO2 emissions on this car are quite a lot. the 4.4i release 170g/km but this is reduced in the 3.0i (100g/km). ...

This car is a great family car especially if you have a bit of money to spend. the interior is superb as it is not to cold in the winter, or to hot during the summer. The engine does not make to much noise and it is an automatic car, which can be useful. I had a spin in the passenger seat with my uncle and it was quite spectacular! ...

...here is my opinion about BMW X5.
New BMW X5 began the first in the class. It(he) was born from the concept uniting in the most various properties. Force stability and dynamism, sports spirit and elegance. On road the automobile is allocated with the bright design of a body. About highly located place of the driver excellent(different) visibility is provided. You can see all around and enjoy movement. The eight-cylinder engine with working volume 4,4 litres develops capacity of 210 kw (286 h.p.) and disperses BMW X5 from a place till speed of 100 kms / h for 7,5 seconds. The constant full drive and sports adjustment of a running part give BMW X5 extraordinary precipitancy and dynamism - on any road, on any turn, on any rise and on any slope. Hi-tech components among which, for example, system of the ...

OK, so lets start by saying that I love this car, its our fourth X5 and I love it very much.
This car starts at #52,800, It's 8 cylinder V 4 valve technology engine has a 4398cc petrol egnine and it does 0- 60 in 7.0 seconds. The fuel consumption is 21.6mpg - not great but not that bad. The fuel tank has a capacity of 93 litres and the CO2 tax is 35% as are all X5's. it has a six speed automatic gearbox with steptronic control and sports suspension.
As with all BMW's the car will vary dramatically by how you spec it, and spec-ing the car is by far the most fun! - you can do this on line at www.bmw.co.uk. From basic the car comes with all the usual, but rather than bore you with a list of specifications, I will try and tell you of my experiences with them.
Ok, so lets tell you about the airbags - luckily enough so far I havent ...

I purchased a BMWX54.4 6 months ago and had the conversion done a week later. The conversion was priced at £2300, whilst it was the most expensive quote I had been given, the person came with a glowing referal so I went ahead.
A doughnut shaped tank which holds 60 litres of gas was fitted, this replaced my spare wheel, (A punctur kit from BMW £70 needed) the only other change to my car was the suspension pump had to be moved to allow the fitting (no visible change inside or out) this is an X5 issue only.
Since having it fitted I have only encountered one problem - the car cut out on me without warning - the fitter traced it down to a faulty injector and I havent had issues since.
I am paying 50.9 pence per litre and have the choice of 3 stations with 3 miles (one being a Morrisons - save the points and you soon rack up the credits ...
