The car being reviewed here is the 2008 BMW X6. The BMW X6 I believe is defining a whole new vehicle category..it's the world's first the Sports Activity Coupe. In a nutshell it's the best of two world's. You have the high ground clearance, high seating position's, big wheels...in my view comparable to the BMW X5, but on top of all that for the first time you get the design, performance and the agility of a large coupe. Talking about the design this X6 does not only have Sport design elements. From its whole silhouette...its a real coupe. For example, when I look at the roof line, its not just the window graphics which is sporty. But from the highest point, above the drivers seat the roof line slopes gently towards the rear, which is a genuine characteristic of a coupe. Also I see there is lot's of "muscle" in the wheel arches emphasising the performance.

On the subject of performance the BMW X6 has an all new engine, its a twin-turbo V8, petrol engine with 400 hp. I noticed what's particularly new with this engine is that BMW have placed the turbochargers inside the cylinder banks. Now this has two advantages 1) the engine is more compact in size, ie..the cg is more compact, and 2)it gives better throttle response, this vehicle goes from 0 - 60 mph 5.3 s...that's pure sports-car territory. Okay moving on the other important factor with the Sports Activity Coupe is agility...the BMW's Dynamic Performance control. Dynamic Performance control is a differential which is attached to the rear axle. ..I couldn't physically see it on the car...So what does its do ? Actually its quite straightforward. With xdrive it means the driver can shift the power between the front and rear axle. So far example on the rear axle with Dynamic Performance Control, the driver can shift the power between the left and right wheels.

On the instrument display in the dashboard cluster, you get an electronic read-out of what's happening on the drivetrain...the advantages of having Dynamic Performance Control are 1)more agility 2)more stability in abrupt change manoeuvres 3)improved traction on differing surfaces...all-in-all I believe BMW's Dynamic Performance Control is a significant enhancement of sheer driving pleasure. Finally I'm at the steering wheel of the X6..at first sight, the feature that pops-to-my-eye are the shift paddles on-behind the steering wheel...this feature is standard in the X6, and allows you to gear shift like a Formula 1 race driver. Another feature which is typical for a coupe...are "knee-pads" for active cornering, so your knees don't bump against the centre console. There are also the instruments of the X6 to underline its sporty character..you also I have a display for Dynamic Performance Control...and you can toggle in the computer field to see what's happening with the drivetrain..it shows the torque distribution between rear and front axle and also the power shift between the left and right wheels.

Apart from that you also have the typical BMW luxury leather covered dashboard, bamboo wood and oyster leather. Just like any other BMW coupe, the BMW X6 has 4 seats that has one big advantage, also at the rear there's strong side supports. So during Sporty driving the rear passengers don't slide across the rear bench. Looking from the outside on the X6 it looks very sporty that one assumes space is sacrificed on the inside, but I was able to sit quite comfortably and the legroom and headroom was generous. In the trunk I could fit 4 golf bags.

So the X6 is a very good car, and with it BMW has cleverly carved itself a niche within a niche.
