Advantages: BMW, BMW, BMW Disadvantages: :very expensive, poor passenger access with hood up
NOW here's an oddity. BMW has taken a shine to a design exercise put to it by some of its more forward-thinking engineers, and decided to manufacture a two-seater convertible, something it has not attempted since the Fifties.
Its sales brochure claims that the aim of the exercise is ''to rekindle old dreams, to challenge man to reawaken his slumbering passions through vitality''. Rot, obviously, but I suppose you've got to fill a brochure ... ...many people, as BMW is aiming to make only 10 cars a week, and UK demand is already running very high. If you order one now, you might just get it next autumn. Is it worth waiting for?
Well, it depends. The BMW Z1 is a good car if you want to be stared at.

Its sales brochure claims that the aim of the exercise is ''to rekindle old dreams, to challenge man to reawaken his slumbering passions through vitality''. Rot, obviously, but I suppose you've got to fill a brochure with something. Luckily, it does not have to convince many people, as BMW is aiming to make only 10 cars a week, and UK demand is already running very high. If you order one now, you might just get it next autumn. Well, it depends. The BMW Z1 is a good car if you want to be stared at.
This is the perfect poser's motor: it is very pretty, it is beautifully made as you would expect of a BMW, and it has got doors that do not open. They simply disappear. You press a recessed button on the outside (it is very stiff, and a nightmare for anyone with nails), and the window and door sink down into the bodywork. You then clamber in over the high sill, (very difficult with a raised hood, and extrememly undignified for anyone with a skirt) and pull a handle on the inside. The door and window rise. It really is very impressive. And the interior is nice: a well-crafted combination of leather and cloth and plastic.
On the road, the car's grip is the most impressive aspect: its ability to hold the road is quite astonishing. The performance is less impressive. This car is quick, but not fast; although one should not expect much more from an engine that is the standard item from the BMW 325i. It rides well, the soft-top is easy to get up and down, and it does not seem too noisy at speed.
Not being very experienced with convertibles, I keep forgetting how easy it is to hear what is going on outside the car, even with the hood up. In stationary traffic you can hear the conversations of pedestrians. When a truck roars by, you get the fright of your life.
You might suffer a similar experience when you hear the price. pounds 36,925. You do get anti-lock brakes as standard, in my view the greatest automotive advance since the seat belt, and the car is very green: it has a catalytic converter, and runs on unleaded fuel.
Advantages: Great for hot, sunny days and posing, great build quality Disadvantages: Attracts unwanted attention, NOT a sports car
If you want a BMWZ3 then do not go for the 1.9 version. The small engine, although provides some torque, is not up to the job to power a heavy 2 seater roadster.
I bought a 1997 model in blue, with 65,000 miles on the clock for £8,000 back in April 2006.
After changing jobs I fancied a change in car. I had always wanted a small two seater convertible and had considered the MX-5 and MGF. Although I like the look of both of these cars they are a bit.....well...... ponzy. I wanted a 'mans' convertible. Unfortunately the SLK, Z4 etc were way beyond my budget, as was the Z3 - or so I thought.....
When I saw the Z3 I had to have a drive in it. It was a bright and sunny day, not too hot since it was April, but the rag top brigade were out in force.
The Z3 felt sluggish, but then I had just gotten rid of my 240bhp twin entry turbo ...

If you want a BMWZ3 then go for the 1.9 version.Great for hot sunny days and posing also greatly built the car is awsome for a small family and even more great you look cool in the car also it is a fast little car built for speed ... maybe not good for small familys then I ordered my Z3 1.9 and was expecting around a years wait but luckily it turned up pretty quick and looked fantastic. Silver really suits this car. It also has ivory leather interior and it is as good as it sounds!..... The car has now done over 30,000 miles and I have not had a single problem. It is the best constructed car I have ever driven. I was expecting a few rattles from a convertible, but have had none.no mechanical problems what so even im very please with my car it is great !!! i am totaly recomending it to any one and every one this car is the bees knee's i ...

Advantages: Plenty. Residual values are also truely astonishing! Disadvantages: The rear doors - they don't open very wide and it's hard to manage getting very young children and the elderly in and out
My wife and I have had our fair share of cars over the past 5 years or so - about 12 in total - and each one was very different to its predecessor. For example, we went from a Ford Escort to a Peugeot 206; a BMWZ3 to a VW Golf; from a LandRover Discovery to Porsche 911; and from a BMW 330d Sport to a Fiant Punto Mia (1.2). Most recent ly we changed from a BMW X3 to a BMW 116i Sport. If asked to choose which of all the cars we have owned I would recommend the most, I would say that depended to whom the recommendation was being made; however, if like us you have a young family and an active lifestyle, although you might imagine the versatility of a 4x4 such as the Discovery would be a good bet to get my vote, I would honestly have to say that, pound for pound, the 1 series has been the best buy by far.
Let's start with the most ...
