In the summer of 2004 I decided it was time to begin my driving lessons. After much deliberating about whether an independent driving school would be better value than a large company I decide to opt for the latter and go with BSM. At £21 a lesson, it was bleeding me dry but all driving lessons are expensive, whoever you go with...there's no avoiding it. Now, I wasn't very well educated on driving, or cars, in fact on my first lesson when asked what the three pedals were for I replied 'Brake, gas and...reverse'. I was useless. But the thing is, I'm a fast learner so after my first driving lesson (where no driving was involved) I felt ready to sit in the drivers seat and start to learn how to operate this machine. On my second lesson, I did get a chance to sit in the drivers seat but we didnt move more than 5 inches the entire lesson. And the next lesson, and the next. My instructor obviously thought she could drag out teaching me 'the biting point' over several lessons...which, I admit she succeeded in doing because I didn't have the nerve to tell her to teach me how to actually DRIVE! I felt like she was milking as many lessons out of me as possible... This opinion was cemented when she finally decided I was ready to start actually driving...My instructor would pick me up, sit and have a chat with me for 5 minutes then proceed to drive to the opposite end of town, wasting about half an hour. We would then park up, have another 10 minute chat, then finally!.. I was driving! My instructor kept stopping me and telling me to pull over to have another chat, then before I knew it, the lesson was over...Of course, by over, I mean, half an hour remaining which is required to go back through town to drop me home. (She drove me home; I was back in the passenger seat.) In total, I probably had only spent half an hour driving in all my lessons, and I'd had about 5. I've heard that all BSM instructors use this method to teach. I can't fault them for being thorough, I just don't feel it's necessary to waste so much time and drag the lessons out. I suppose the important thing is that I passed my driving test first time, as did my brother who went with BSM. In fact, everyone I know who have with BSM have passed first time. So maybe i shouldn't be complaining. I would recommend them, but with that I would also warn you that they will try and get as much money out of you as possible!
