Advantages: Many functions, clear sound, no interference, talk back Disadvantages: Temp sensor maybe a bit sensitive
We recently borrowed this monitor from a friend - it's on our wish list but we can't really afford to buy one, so we are trialling this one at the moment.
Due to us borrowing it, we were never given an instruction manual, but have still managed to figure out most of the functions with success! And compared to our Tomy Walkabout, this is a fantastic monitor, even if it is a little pricey (£69.99 I think)
The Baby Unit: ...top:
-On/Off Switch
-Rec button (which I think is to record your voice but we haven't used this function)
-Page (to page the parent unit I presume if you've lost it somewhere)
-A button with three circles on - I think this is to increase or decrease the brightness of the nightlight
-Nightlight
-Volume up
-Volume down
-Play/Stop (the lullabies)
-Music (to select the lullaby) more
We recently borrowed this monitor from a friend - it's on our wish list but we can't really afford to buy one, so we are trialling this one at the moment.
Due to us borrowing it, we were never given an instruction manual, but have still managed to figure out most of the functions with success! And compared to our Tomy Walkabout, this is a fantastic monitor, even if it is a little pricey (£69.99 I think)
The Baby Unit:
This unit has 9 buttons across the top:
-On/Off Switch -Rec button (which I think is to record your voice but we haven't used this function) -Page (to page the parent unit I presume if you've lost it somewhere) -A button with three circles on - I think this is to increase or decrease the brightness of the nightlight -Nightlight -Volume up -Volume down -Play/Stop (the lullabies) -Music (to select the lullaby)
There is a temperature sensor on this unit and the temp is displayed in the centre of the unit, and also it displays the name of the lullaby. There is also a link light which lights up when the baby unit is linked to the parent unit, which is reassuring. The night light gives off an orange glow which is quite nice, but we've never used night lights for our daughter and we aren't about to start now.
The lullabies are pretty rubbish, I'm not sure how many there are in total, but Twinkle Little Star, The Muffin Man and Jack and Jill are all on there. You can also adjust the volume of these if you wish.
The Parent Unit:
This looks like a portable telephone and sits nicely in a cradle which also charges up the batteries for you.
There are 6 buttons on the front of this unit:
-Menu (which allows you to scroll through the options on the baby unit remotely, if that makes sense - I.e. you can activate the lullabies, night light etc without going in and disturbing your baby) -Mute (to turn off the sound of your baby's cries!!) -Arrow Up (for scrolling through menus) -Arrow Down (for scrolling through menus) -A tick (for selecting options) -On/Off Switch
There are lights across the top of this unit which flash when your baby makes a sound (so if you have the mute button on, you are still aware if your baby is making any noise).
The temperature of the baby's room is displayed on this unit as well and it beeps every time the temp changes. Something which my husband and I found quite annoying, until we figured out that you could turn this alarm off, but the display still lights up blue every time the temp changes, whether it goes up or down. And last night for some reason the temp in our daughter's room was going from 23-24 degrees every few minutes, so we had this blue light flashing on constantly which really was quite irritating. I'm not sure if this can be turned off too.
There is also a handy talk button on the side of the parent unit which works like a walkie talkie I suppose, allowing you to talk to your baby through the monitor instead of going up to their room. I'm not sure what my daughter would think if she heard my voice coming out of nowhere.... But I think it might soothe a younger baby to hear their parent's voice. It is also quite useful for talking to your partner if they are upstairs and you can't be bothered to go and find them!!
There is a torch function which we have not used either, mainly because we always have the parent unit downstairs and have no use for a torch. It is activated by a button on the side and it seems quite bright, so I imagine it would be pretty useful for getting around in the dark upstairs if your baby wakes up.
The most important thing for me with this monitor is the sound, and it is really quite clear, when we first started using it, we had to keep going upstairs to check it was working because there is just no interference at all! And when you're used to the constant buzzing of a standard Tomy monitor, having something like this was really quite weird. But we soon got used to it and were confident that it was working fine.
It's also good that it doesn't pick up every little snuffle or movement your baby makes so it doesn't have you jumping up and down every time your baby moves their arm or leg. You can also adjust the sensitivity of this from 1-5. We have it set on 5 because the baby unit is at the other side of the room to our daughter, but it picks up her cries and chatter just fine.
Another little handy thing is that it comes with a cable which you can attach to an MP3 player so if your child has a favourite song, you can play it to them through the monitor - I thought this was pretty good, although we haven't used this function yet.
Anyway, after trialling it, we are hoping to save up and buy one soon. It comes really recommended from us. I think maybe some of the functions are pointless, but some people may find them useful and others not so I think it appeals to a wider audience by having those extra functions available.
Advantages: Works well, can be personalised a bit. Intuitive interface. Disadvantages: Poor battery life after a few months, combined with annoying low battery alarm!
...because: - We trusted the BT brand name - The digital (DECT) sound quality was supposed to be good - It had a couple of extra features we liked - It was quite compact - It wasn't too hideously expensive - The mains chargers work for both the parent and baby units (so less faffing around with plugs) - You can link an MP3 player to the baby unit and play music to them (ps we have NEVER used this function though we did think it was cool!) This is a ... ...for 18 months now! Hopefully that'll make the review useful! **Set up** This is very easy - just plug in the baby and the parent units, turn on both and the parent unit will find the baby one, with the light changing from a flashing one to a steady green light that shows it's linked. You do have to make sure that the batteries in the parent unit are fully charged before you start using it. And don't put the two right beside each other, or the feedback ...

Advantages: Great sensitivity Disadvantages: Runs on mains only
===Why would you buy a Baby Monitor? === Well you need one if you have a baby on the way or you already have a baby. The reason being is that when your child starts sleeping upstairs in day or in they're own room at night, you need to hear if they are in distress or have just woken up from a nap. If you can hear these things quickly, rather than running at the bottom of the stairs every 2 minutes to check if you've heard something, then your child ... ...you will go to them if they need you. ===My thoughts behind buying this one=== I bought this one because it was rated very highly in all the Parent & Baby magazines when I was pregnant and looked to have allot of features. It was more expensive than the others on the high street, but it's worth it! This is the first and only baby monitor I've bought, however I don't think I will ever need to update it when I have more kids in the futre. It timeless! ...
