I recently decided to change ISP simply because i felt like it.
I had been beta testing AOL products in the past and despite the fact that the company is much maligned due to the vast amount of junk it dumps on the hard drive, i never had any cause to dislike the service. However, i felt like having a change and opted for the 2MB BT Yahoo package. I felt that it was a little expensive considering the capped limit of 30GB (just increased to 40GB) for downloads, but in reality, caps are not too much of a problem unless you download lots of movies from file sharing networks (legally, of course!).
We have found that we struggle to reach 10GB per month, so maybe i am paying a little over the top, but i felt that it is better safe than sorry. Even if you do go over the limit on occasions, BT do not penalise you as long as it isn't a regular thing.
The company provides you with an email facility that manages to filter most spam to a bulk folder, which you quickly browse through the list and then delete the lot. Any that aren't spam are easy to mark as such and the program learns pretty well.
Included in the service are radio stations known as LAUNCHCAST and you may create your own station with your preferences which it will endeavour to play. It will also play recommendations from other people that like the same tracks that you like and also by Genre that you like. There will always be tracks that you don't like, but you can rate them as 0 and they will never be played again. It is better than listening to the rubbish that pours out of the average radio DJ.
For those that like Messenger services to chat with friends, there is Yahoo messenger, I understand that it is supposed to be very good, but i have never felt the need to use a chat service, so i cannot say for certain.
The sidebar can be set to provide easy access to Bookmarks, Launchcast, News, Weather, Email and other regularly used functions, but it is limited to only a few choices at once. That is not a problem, as the main menu bar has all the functions on it, so perhaps the side bar is irrelevant
The movie trailer downloads are good and don't take long, providing a good selection of all the latest trailers.
There is a pretty comprehensive sports section for those that wish to check on there favourite teams or to see how Jenson Button did in the last race.
Anti virus and firewall software is free to download, or you may choose to pay a small subscription to receive a better product with online protection.
Email spam filters are provided and you may choose upto 500 disposable emails for signing up to websites that may bombard you with spam and sell your name to everybody with a septic tank full of viagra to sell you. When this happens, you just delete the email address and all your friends can keep contacting you on your main email that is never used for signing up to something that you are not certain about.
The company also provide anti spyware software enabling you to scan your PC for any nasty software that would like to dump pop ups and banners all over your screen.
The service is very reliable and i have not had it crash on me, although there have been times when i had a slow connection, but this happens on any service.
Customer service is very good, but you may be waiting for a while before they answer, however, there is one number that provides a call back service if you want them to and it is the same back up as the other number. I just wish i could remember which number it is. Fortunately, i haven't needed it since setting the system up.
As with any provider, BT can provide a modem and Micro filter to separate your phone/broadband connections, but i opted for a Linksys ADSL 2+ gateway from a local shop, so BT provide no support for this, but they do try to help.
It was easy enough to set up due to the fact that BT provide all of the settings with your welcome pack. There are faster local providers and they may be worth trying if you can get them, but 2GB is the fastest i can get and for its reliability and good browser package, i would certainly recommend BT Yahoo.
