Oh how I love BT. Rant, rant, you ain't seen nothing yet mate.
No I won't rant about it. A simple example of my experience.

I have a BT Connect for business account. Now, when I started I had a website hosted in the US for my 'consultancy business' (ie me) and I moved to BT Connect because they were cheaper and looked professional. Sure, I got my website loaded although the structure was a bit dodgy. Sure I had to change the names of all of my web files because of case sensitivity issues (the fault of the writers of UNIX not BT probably). But the service was slow ... ...was the reply. Where DO BT send their engineers and technical people for rudeness training ? The place that British Rail used to use all those years ago ? Anyway. Some months and some compensation later . . . no joy.
So now I have found another host who can host all four of my websites (even BT couldn't stop me adding more sites) for £100. BT would charge me that for six months. The service at the new site is faster, if a bit brusque ... more

But the service was slow and unreliable and, frankly, a bit pants.
Then I thought about adding a second website. So I asked their support. Yes, no problem they said. Second domain, same account, different sites, easy. So I bought a second domain and, guess what, it pointed at the first website and I wanted a separate one. So I asked for assistance. "Oh you can't do that" was the reply.
The service at the new site is faster, if a bit brusque at times, but keen and professional (WWW.UKSHELLS.CO.UK if you are interested)
And their service has been down all weekend - a subscription based service I should add.
All that remains now is to transfer my domains. I asked two weeks ago and they are thinking about it. The latest excuse ? I didn't use the right email address to request transfer. Think about that for a minute . . .
Advantages: BT service, Free connection Disadvantages: Totally separate from other bt packages, more expensive
...have been a subscriber to BT as an ISP for some time but really wanted to upgrade to a free call charges package. Along came BT Connect offereing free connection for £19.99 per month, perfect for me, but I think I may have been a bit foolish.
The package works fine but I cannot send by normal btinternet e-mails without logging off and signing back on under btinternet instead of btconnect and I really don't want the hassle of having to tell the world ... ...not nearly as 'joined up' as I would have expected from a BT subsidiary operation.
My advice to anyone interedted in a free connection charge service from BT, check it out VERY CAREFULLY, btconnect is not an ideal solution for me and I am sure I am not alone. ...

Advantages: quick, available, saves a fortune Disadvantages: can't use it during the day for free
I have halved my monthly telephone bills by subscribing to BT Surftime and connecting through FreeServe OffPeak.
In addition to my normal calls, I used to spend around £20 every month connecting to my ISP's local-rate number (on Family & Friends of course!).
Now I pay £5.99 per month to BT for unlimited access between 6pm & 8am weekdays and ALL weekend.
Freeserve is not only free, but always available, and they even reckon that they will PAYING ME £ per month for connecting through them with SurfTime (I won't hold my breath on that one...)
I would like to recommend it to you but if I do you might register and clog up MY access, so... don't register it's terrible :o) ...

Advantages: Cheap and usually reliable Disadvantages: Connection problems in recent weeks
Bought the Pay as you go package early in 2000. The reason is because it is cheap and convenient - I like the idea of no tariff and being able to pop a voucher on every couple of months. The area the reception covers is also very good - even from the Isle of Skye!!!
My phone model is a standard one. There are better ones in the BT range if you want to pay that bit more. I am going to look at the WAP phones soon...
However - I have noticed in recent days some strange goings on with connecting to BT CELLNET - or rather the fact that I can not connect. Whether this is to do with excessive network use I don't know - no one ever said - but I was without connection on and off for a week.
I know it is not my phone because I am well within the reception area.
As a one off I don't mind, but if this is to become a regular occurance then ...

Advantages: Great Customer Support, Good online facilities Disadvantages: Experience of their routers not great - optimistic about the new one though!
Since moving in with Lovely Man just over two years ago, our internet usage has sky-rocketed. Wedding planning, internet banking, emails to my mum assuring her that living with Lovely Man is turning out ok - you get the idea.
Prior to installing me, Lovely Man was content with his BT dial-up connection on the chunky PC he kept on the bookcase. He never had time to use it during the day when connection would have been slow, and found that it worked perfectly well for him when he wanted it. (In the middle of the night.)
I, however, am a little more demanding from my computer and my internet connection and gradually introduced Lovely Man to the convenience of connecting when you like, where you like and for as long as you like. Something we hadn't considered before was cost, so I was soon trawling the sites (via dial ...
