We bought our BT Decor 425 as an emergency telephone when we moved into our new apartment as we needed a way of communicating with the outside world more cheaply than using our mobile telephones. As it was only intended as a stop gap in the interim between moving in and geting completely settled I thought that £24.99 was more than a fair price.
Setting the telephone up was very easy but I didn't expect that it would need to be plugged in to power the built in answering machine. Luckily, a plug socket is located very closely to our telephone box. Once everything is plugged in and the answering machine message recorded, the telephone is ready to go. The message is easy to record as every step of the recording process is prompted by an electronic voice prompting system. Messages are recorded digitally rather than onto a tradition tape so there has never been an issue with the the recording capability being full up and messages being missed.
The telephone stores up to 10 telephone numbers which again are easy to store thanks to the voice prompting and there is a little area where the speed dial numbers can be written down for those of us who are forgetful.
Unlike it's more hi-tech counterparts, there is no display, so you cannot tell who is calling, but you can bar numbers that you do not wish to receive calls from. This I have never had the need to use, but as with the storage of messages and telephone numbers, everything is done by step by step voice prompts. The ringer is a bit of a let down but you cannot have everything. It is loud enough, but it does grate after a few rings if set loudly. Thanks to the ringer volume control though it can be set to quiet if you do not want to be disturbed.
The call reception is as you would expect from a landline, perfectly clear and the speaker picks up very well, from what I can tell being on the other end of a line when my wife has telephoned me.

Advantages: Call screening is back and well Disadvantages: difficult to multi-task with hand set shape
Brief jog through what this has got.
Digital answering machine (12 minutes), Remote access, Visual message indicator, 10 number quickdial, loudspeaker volume control, call screening
It is only recently I reinstalled a land-line phone in my home and quite frankly I didn't miss it and had been happy using my mobile. After having my daughter though I thought it would probably be useful to pop a phone on the line so when I have people in to baby-sit ... ...what she is doing. This is the phone I purchased from my local shop. I did not allow myself long to choose because I get rather excited by phones, so I pretty much grabbed the first thing on the shelf in a price range that looked very good. £24
You don't find people buying answer phones much now because you can switch on free network ones - but I like this and find the old call screening thing a pure joy. With call screening I can pick up the phone ...
