Over the past few months (and with many thanks and hugs to my partner) the "sensitive restoration" of my 1930's home has leapt forward, with, in my view excellent results. Many thanks to options and products available at B&Q.

Flooring.

A) Our first project. The dinning room.

"Laminate. "

Armed with measurements an idea of what I was looking for and basic know how I hit the Flooring aisle of B&Q.

Firstly the selections avaible were most comprehensive. A video on how to lay the flooring was playing. Leaflets on "How To Lay the flooring" were readily available . Not so staff ,but with patience when the selection was made someone finally was there to help me finalise what was required , with reference to quantity and help getting it from the checkout to my car.

Prices varied considerably, special offfers were available and more recently Project packs out lining total needs are advertised . Opting for middle of the road prices , and not "real wood" The flooring I selected was Universal lock (no glue required). At £21.00 and a few pence per square metre. I selected beech effect. There were several different effects on offer. Varying shades of pine through to mahagony. Excluding trims to complete the flooring the cost amounted to just over £100 hundred pounds. In comparison to other outlets and bearing in mind personal choice.. The price could have been a little cheaper , and as much as £400.00 if in real pine.

The "locking" system is relatively easy to use. It took approximately 8 hrs to lay. Using the recommended underlay . A cushion foam like sheet at around £15.00 per pack. (which had enough over to complete other areas.) The quality and effect once in situ is very good. It is easy to maintain. (but a real dust trap) The trims a mere £1.38 (starting price) per strip approximately 2 meters in length a wide selection is available. Apart from an ever boiling kettle , basic know-how ,patience, a few well chose profanities the only other thing required was a small hack saw.

B) The kitchen.

"Tile Lock."

This is the layed with the same principle as the laminate. A Locking system which requires no glue. Whilst not ceramic (MDF) every effort has been made by the manufacturer to simulate a tile effect. In my opinion it really does work !. Once again the price varied considerably . Colour options are not huge , but tasteful. I managed to co-ordinate quite easily . At £31.48 a pack for 1.75 metres I felt this to be most reasonble. At that time and as far as i am aware that is the only price option available at B&Q. Once again in making comparisons., at other outlets the price is middle of the road subject to personal choice. For an area 3.35 x 2.43 the cost excluding underlay and trims was just under £100.00 . Bargain .! Once again, relatively easy to lay . Good quality and effect once in situ. Easily maintained.

C) Down stair toilet .

"Ceramic tiles."

Glazed tiles .... a huge selection is available. !
Purchase options vast . Single tiles, decorative, packs of tiles, colour ranges, designer, unusual, (pebbles, single motif, ) the list goes on and on. As does the price list. The cheapest being £1.30, increasing as to personal choice per tile .

The packs of tiles are not so varied , but the selection is good . Again the prices vary accordingly. when comparing prices at different outlets B&Q rates highly for choice and price. They know thier markets.!

Because it is a "toilet" and not in constant view I selected a B&Q pack of 11 tiles for just £6.98.each tile being 330x330mm and 98mm thick.(limited colour range.) Two packs covered the area in question. An adhesive and grout mix ( under £20.00 to cover upper to 1.8 metres) and Tile cutter (under £20.00) increased the price, but on the whole B&Q once again saved me a fortune. (As did my beloved. Thanks again.)

Setting these tiles is of course much more specialised. But I am really pleased with the
overall effect. Again - real value for money.

For now that is all projects completed. With regard to the flooring. I am unable to comment on the durability of the product fully , as it is to be appreciated , the flooring has not been down long. I would however say I do not think durability will be a problem.

I would not hesitate to recommend B&Q when planning and pricing for flooring products. I would however pass comment on thier packaging! It could do with modifying somewhat , to strengthen and secure such bulky items.

They also offer the "price promise" whereby they match or offer discount if you can prove better pricing elsewhere ! This in my experiance is honoured. Also in thier favour is that they accept returns with packaging and receipt available .

We have literally today just finished decorating our hallway and we changed the flooring from carpet to wood flooring locking system too. We chose the Bevel Loc in he wide width in oak, there was lots of swearing but the end result has been worth it. The dogs are not so sure as they keep slipping! Julia
