How did I ever live without straightners? I can't believe I used to actually leave the house with hair like a wild woman before straightners came to the rescue. I have that really pants type of hair. It is neither straight nor curly. It has more of a wave than curl. But not a nice wave, nor an even wave. It is an all over the place wave. This means I cannot tip my head upside down and dry my hair, nor leave it to the elements to dry on its own. This is because brushing it would be impossibe and going out in public would scare small children. So you can understand that hair appliances are, for me, very important. Therefore, I took alot of time umming and ahhing over tongs. I need tongs that will tame this mop I call hair and give me sleek, glossy curls. Okay admittedly, the tongs themselves look like a Victorian torture instrument. They have a metal barrel, and wrapped round that is a black piece of plastic in a spiral shape that moves up and down when you press a lever, to push and squeeze the hair against the hot barrel. Sound painfuk? Well if you touch your scalp with the hot barrel then yes, it is.
So after pluging the appliance in and waiting 5 minutes for it to get hot (They don't take that long to heat up but I like to make sure they are at an optimum heat) I section off the hair and get to work. Now when I say section off the hair it makes me sound like I know what I'm doing. I basically mean put a hair bobble in, leave some bits hanging down and start to curl them.
It is easy to get started. Basically clamp the hair by lifting up the little lever and get twisting. Roll the barrel up the hair, keeping it in between the black plastic spiral. When it is up to the top, press the lever in. The black plastic twist squeezes the hair together. Hold for 10 seconds, release and unwind. Simple. You are left with a beautiful, bouncy, spiral curl. Now all you need to do is repeat the hold, release, unwind mantra over the whole of your head!
I have very long hair, and to curl it all with these tongs takes abour an hour to an hour and a half. But I have to say its worth it. The curls drop slightly after a while, but they stay in. So much so that the next morning you can wear your hair down and still have quite a lot of curl and bounce in it.
One thing I would suggest is to use a spray which will protect your hair from the heat. And even better, get someone else to curl it for you.
I bought these just before Christmas last year and have yet to perfect the art of curling! I think the main reason for this is I can't get used to the sight of me with curly hair - I have naturally straight hair that has only the slightest kink in it caused by my layers so curls are alien to me!
