Probably not very original, I know, but nan thought it was the best thing since sliced bread, and the look on her face on Christmas morning when she opened it was pure delight! Dad got to work setting up the foot spa and carefully read the little instruction manual beforehand that came with it. This Christmas we couldn't think of what to buy for nan. She can be so difficult to buy gifts for and she has this awful tendancy to pull 'one of her faces' when she opens her presents, and that can be a bit disappointing when you've racked your brains and taken weeks to buy what you thought was the perfect gift. She's usually polite and always says thank you - but her words of gratitude are often swiftly followed by, "Mmmm, that'll come in useful for ….", and then reels off a list of mates she can palm her gift off onto next Christmas!
Nan is forever complaining about her tired and aching feet (not to mention the rest of her body). We did consider a bath spa to ease her aching old bones but mum thought that might be a bit too ambitious as nan has a bit of bother getting in and out of the bath on her own as it is, and we thought the addition of a spa in her bath might just be a little too much for to handle.
We therefore decided to compromise and this year my brother and myself clubbed together and bought her a Babyliss Body Benefit Rainfall Foot Spa Relaxing Foot Massager. Probably not very original, I know, but nan thought it was the best thing since sliced bread, and the look on her face on Christmas morning when she opened it was pure delight! She was over the moon and exclaimed that her friend Ruby's daughter-in-law had bought Ruby one just like it the Christmas before last. Nan said she's always wanted one and asked my dad to set it up straight away - before she'd even opened up the rest of her presents.
Dad got to work setting up the foot spa and carefully read the little instruction manual beforehand that came with it. The advantage of this particular spa is that it can be used with as little as half the amount of water you would normally use in other conventional foot spas. Most spas require up to two litres of water, but this spa can be used with as little as only one litre. Mum measured out just over a litre of warm water and added it to the spa.
Without us having to ask nan to do anything in preparation, we were all rather taken aback when she stood up in front of the TV, hitched up her dress and then proceeded to pull down her American Tan tights in full view of all of us!! Dad coughed and looked the other way and before mum had time to ask nan if she wanted to go upstairs to get ready, nan's tights were off and she was ready for her foot soaking adventure. The instruction booklet said that you could add oils / aromatherapy preparations of your choice to the foot spa and as mum uses some lovely aromatherapy oils herself which she uses in her bath, nan had a wide variation to choose from. She sat for ages and ages trying to decide whether or not she wanted to be invigorated, rejuvenated, relaxed or just stress-free. Nan got into such a quandary she was unable to decide between any of them and just opted for the plain old water in the end!
Mum was a little exacerbated by this time and asked nan to just sit still in the comfy chair and that they would carry in the foot spa together with a nice cup of tea. Nan did as she was told and waited patiently whilst dad and mum fiddled about with some knobs trying out the three settings. Mum initially put it onto a gentle massage setting. It made a slight humming noise but it wasn't too loud but I would imagine that if you have a laminate floor rather than carpets that the humming might be a little distracting after a while. After a couple of minutes nan decided she'd like to try a different sting and mum put it onto the next setting on the dial which released a stream of multi- directional showers of water which began to gently pummel at nan's feet. Nan said it felt very relaxing and that it tickled her. She closed her eyes and lay her head back and a small smile crept across her face. She was obviously loving it.
Nan seemed to find it a little uncomfortable having to place her feet directly flat onto the surface of the floor (as she's only a little lady). A very useful feature of this particular foot spa as that you are able to angle the spa into a semi-upright position. It has two little levers on the base which you can pull out to make the spa tilt upwards so that your feet are facing upright rather than flat on the floor. Nan said she preferred this angle and then asked us to put it onto the next setting. Nan was now experiencing a more intense vibrating effect with a greater cascade of water and again she said it was very relaxing and that she felt sleepy.
We reminded her that it was still very early in the day and that she still had a lot of presents to open and eventually the water became cold and nan reluctantly removed her wrinkled (but very relaxed and invigorated) feet from the water. Afterwards as we opened the rest of our presents, nan's dog had a sniff and lapped up a good deal of nan's water remnants and that made her laugh as she said it had another use!!
Emptying the foot spa was very easy to do. It is very easy to carry even when it is full of water and is extremely lightweight as it has a very useful water reservoir in the base and also it means that spilling the contents over the floor as you carry it to the sink isn't really a problem. Nan is able to manage to do this herself, that's how easy it is!
The spa also comes with a very useful extra long cord so that when nan plugs it is in her own home, she can still sit in her favourite chair and she doesn't' have to make sure she sits too near to an electrical socket before she can use it. It comes with a twelve-month manufacturer's guarantee and set my brother and me back £45 from Comet but as it was split between the two of us, we didn't think that was too bad. Nan is well worth it.
All in all a very good buy. Nan is full of praise about her lovely new foot spa and now she can boast to Ruby that she also has the luxury of being able to soak her tired aching feet at the end of the day - and the dog has an extra bowl to drink from when he gets a bit thirsty!!
