Baileys Irish Cream is a drink that I occasionally drink and one of the reasons why I make sure that I drink it occasionally is because of its ability in luring you into a false sense of security whilst drinking it.

The taste is very unlike other liqueurs. This is mainly due to the fact that Baileys consists of 50% of dairy cream.

Baileys was launched in 1974 and today 1,600 glasses of Baileys are consumed every minute of every day. Wow!!!

Baileys consists of a combination of dairy cream and Irish whiskey and additional spirits and natural flavours. This combination of whiskey and cream is one of the most difficult since both of these are not compatible together. Baileys have managed this without using any additives or preservatives and providing a drink that is utterly and totally unique.

My favourite way of having Baileys is with plenty of ice. It tastes a lot better when totally chilled. My wife prefers it straight but chilled. Another way of having this lovely drink is to mix it with piping hot coffee. This is a lot better than the usual Irish coffee.

One of the elements that stand out with Baileys is its creaminess and smoothness. Sure you can feel the alcohol but the alcohol is immediately wiped away by the smooth and delicious milky taste, which reminds me a bit of a milkshake. As mentioned earlier it leaves you with a very false sense of security and you may end up over indulging yourself and getting a bit tipsy before you know it. I;m talking from experience here.

You should keep your bottle in temperatures ranging between 5-20 degrees centigrade. Keeping it in the refrigerator is preferable. Try and keep it at around the same temperature because fluctuating it excessively might lead to it getting clumped. However do not be alarmed by any clumping if you see any. Simply stir it around and it will be as good as ever.

Baileys comes in attractive looking bottles of 70cls. They go for around £18.99 a bottle. I personally find this quite expensive but since I drink it only occasionally it doesn’t really pinch. The only problem with this drink is that once opened you should consume the bottle at least within a week, even if kept refrigerated. Therefore Baileys only appears when I have a small gathering of friends or relatives at home as I prefer finishing the bottle in one sitting so as to enjoy its freshness and delicious taste to the fullest.

On the downside Baileys is weight watchers nightmare. The sugar content is 20% and fat content is 15%. A normal glass of 50ml contains around 8.5gms of carbohydrates and about 140 calories.

Overall a wonderful drink best had occasionally and best chilled.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE
