‘Ballet Shoes’ tells us about bond that grows between three adopted sisters who aren‘t really sister, in pre-war England. Pauline, Petrova and Posy Fossil were adopted as infants by Great Uncle Mathew. Uncle Mathew collects the three girls one after the other in much the same fashion that he collected his fossils. The girls are looked after by his niece, Sylvia and his housekeeper. Their story revolves around each girl’s struggle to fulfil her dreams and be marked in history. Pauline, named after St Paul, is an aspiring actress. Petrova, named after St Peter and her Russian heritage, desperately wishes to become a mechanic and pilot. And Posy, the vainest of the three, will become in her mind, the greatest ballerina of all time.
Mary Noel Streatfeild was born in 1897, in Amberly, Sussex, England. She trained as an actress, and acted for nine years before writing her first book, for adults. In 1936 she wrote the classic Ballet Shoes, and then wrote 30 other children's books. Noel sadly died in 1986. From the popular ‘Shoes’ series, ‘Ballet Shoes’ is the only one that has remained in print, over the years. The others were fortunately, recently republished. I first read ‘Ballet Shoes’ when I was 10 and have re-read it for several years, I can still pick it up now at the grand old age of 20. Her books gave me immense pleasure as a child, as I loved ballet. The style of writing is charmingly old-fashioned and reminds me fondly of writer’s such as, Susan Coolidge (‘What Kate Did’, series) and a little of Enid Blyton’s earlier work. The writing draws you in to experience the characters’ world.
All the characters are very endearing, even Gum (Great Uncle Mathew). Pauline, is a girly girl, with her fair looks and love of attractive clothes. While, Petrova has a dark colouring and a love of mechanics, that makes her different from Pauline and Posy and indeed many other girls her age. The vain Posy, is the youngest girl and takes the most time fitting in with the other two. All three girls are sent to a performance school because money is short. The Stage school, helps them discover what they really want. I liked the way the character’s grew as people, with their ambitions and relationships. I could most relate to Posy as a child, because I never seemed to do the conventional thing.
Although, they are orphans, they are loved dearly by Aunt Sylvia. But what niggled me when reading it again as an adult, was the girl’s lack of curiosity about their parents. This is probably because they are still children, involved in their own interests. ‘Ballet’ does not centre heavily on ballet, it also features acting and focuses largely on the girls problems and relationships with each other and their loyal desire to make their name "Fossil" famous.
Overall, this is a sweet and innocent tale of the trial and tribulations of dance and stage school for three different girls. ‘Ballet Shoes’ was the first children’s book to feature a stage school and this is what I think makes its such a delightful and popular children’s book. There’s not many other children’s books with ballet and acting. I highly recommend this book to all girls from age 8 and beyond, you won’t be disappointed.

Advantages: well thought out characters and a nice story Disadvantages: likely to make you cry
I first read Ballet Shoes when I was eight. It was the first of Noel Streatfield's books I'd read, and it remains my favourite. I put it away during my teenage years and forgot about it until Christmas 2007 when I watched the BBC adaptation with Emma Watson. I went to Indonesia and got the film on knock-off DVD, and immediately after watching I rang home to get my parents to order me a copy. It was a great welcome home. The book opens with 'Garnie' ... ...arrives with a pair of ballet slippers, and a name - Posy. The three girls hero-worship GUM, they see themselves as his collection, and in respect of this they choose the surname Fossil as they were collected just like his other fossils. Petrova comes up with a vow to honour the name fossil as it's theirs and theirs only, and no-one can say it's because of their grandfather. Garnie and Nana bring the girls up, but over the years the money that GUM ...

Advantages: makes the war be seen in a different light Disadvantages: only small writing in most of the editions, get a modern one with bigger writing.
Set in pre war britain, the main charactors are evacuee's who are sent to live in the countyside to get away from London. The author keeps you wanting to read on so well, I have read this book twice in the month I have owned it! I suppose the disadvantages of the book are that the cover on all the editions in my opinion would not attract the younger generation.
At first when they start living at this manor house, the man of the house is very popus ... ...girl in his house and for a while persists the girl (who happens to be the oldest) goes.
Eventually then all learn to get on very well as a family and then when the end of the war comes, bothe families can't bring themselves to say goodbye, not even the man who was grumpy at the start.
Would make very good reading for 9-12yr olds who are just starting to get affected by the true horror of the war as it can give a peace of mind and make you feel ...

Manufacturer's product description
Pauline, Petrova and Posy are found as orphaned babies in different parts of the world by eccentric fossil collector and explorer Gum. He adopts them, takes them to his London home and leaves them in the care of his niece Sylvia and the family Nurse. Then off he goes to continue his exploring, saying that he'll be back in five years' time. When the three little girls are old enough, they choose the surname Fossil for themselves and vow to make the name famous. At first they lead privileged and sheltered lives. But when Gum fails to return after five years, Sylvia's money begins to run out. First she is forced to take in some boarders - an engaging and eclectic mix of characters - but then she decides that the girls should go to acting school. This way they will be able to earn some money before they grow up. Pauline adores the school, as she dreams of becoming an actress. Petrova hates it, all she wants to do is learn about cars and planes and engines. Posy loves it too - she is born to be a dancer and the school is the perfect place for her.
