Although the sun seems to have gone away again for a while, I thought I’d tell you about a product I have been using during summer to keep my skin cool and fresh feeling, and to help soothe my sunburn. That product is Banana Boat Aloe Vera Gel.
THE COMPANY:
The company that makes Banana BoatAloe Vera Gel is called Sun Pharmaceuticals, which is an American company, the Banana Boat brand being distributed in the UK by Playtex Products Inc, according to the little label I found on the back of my bottle. WHERE TO BUY:
If you go to http://www.bananaboat.co.uk/ there is a link on how to buy, but when I tried clicking it the box that came up looked very complicated and I got a bit scared off from ordering! I’m not actually 100% sure if you can order online. I think so. If anyone does manage to successfully order online via their UK website – let me know! Luckily there are other, much easier ways of getting your hands on this product!
As always, you should search on Google/Yahoo/Kelkoo and other search engines for websites that stock and sell it, I have come across several websites that do stock & sell it. Also, don’t forget to check out e-bay,
I got my last bottle from there for a good price!
If you don’t fancy ordering online, there are quite a few high street shops that I’ve seen selling this products. Boots and Superdrug both sell it and I’ve been told that Wilkinsons do too, and I think even some supermarkets now sell it too.
All in all it’s not too difficult to get your hands on this product, though not all shops seem to stock the full Banana Boat range, so you may need to shop around to find the exact product you’re looking for.
PACKAGING:
This product comes in a clear plastic bottle with yellow and blue writing on the front and white writing on the back. My bottle has a bright yellow screw-cap lid with a little flip up squirty spout, though I do believe that some bottles have white pump dispensers on them. I’m not sure if it’s because they’ve started putting the pumps on new bottles, or if there’s a difference between the bottle’s sold in the UK and USA. So anyway, you might see either type of lid on the bottle you buy! Banana Boat aloe Vera Gel is available in two different bottle sizes, 230g and 453g, which is good because the 230g size is just the right size to take on holiday with you, and the 453g size is ideal if you use a lot of this product (like me) and like to have a nice big bottle in! On the back of the bottle in the white writing, there’s some blurb about the product, directions and also a list of ingredients, as well as other random bits of information about the size etc. You might have to squint a little to see the writing properly if you’ve not got the best eyesight as it’s quite small!
LOOK & SMELL:
Inside the clear bottle, the Aloe Vera Gel looks green in colour, and you can see that it has a gel texture to it and a fair few little bubbles in it too. The smell is really nice, it’s a very fresh smell, and it’s not particularly girlie so I’d say definitely suitable for both sexes. It’s quite a summery smell. It’s not too strong or overpowering and won’t interfere with your perfume or aftershave or any other scents you might be wearing at the same time. I don’t think many people would be particularly offended by the scent!
TEXTURE & FEEL:
As you might have guessed, this Aloe Vera gel has a thick, gel texture to it. It feels cold to the touch when you put it on to your skin and immediately cools, soothes and comforts your skin. It’s not greasy at all, and it’s easily and quickly absorbed into you skin, plus doesn’t leave too much stickiness on your hands after it’s dried in. The texture and feel of Banana Boat Aloe Vera Gel is overall a very pleasant one.
PERFORMACE & EFFECT:
As I’ve already mentioned, the effect of this Aloe Vera gel is to immediately cool, soothe, comfort and soften your skin upon application. Used on sunburnt, rough, dry, irritated and otherwise unhappy skin, it provides fast relief. The effects are immediate, and over time I found that it made my skin much softer and smoother feeling. This product performs well, and I was very impressed with it. It does exactly what it claims on the bottle and doesn’t disappoint.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
Well it’s a petty easy product to use really! You simply flip the lid up (or squirt some out using the pump if you have a pump bottle), them apply as much or as little to your body. You can apply it anywhere on your body, including your face, and you can apply is as often as you need to.
USES:
Although Banana Boat Aloe Vera Gel is found in the after sun section, it does actually have many more uses than just as an after sun product. As well as being used to soothe sunburn, it can be used to cool and soften the skin, soothe minor burns, comfort irritated or dry skin (especially conditions such as eczema), soften roughened and dry skin and generally help the skin to heal. I find it an invaluable product to have t hand in the summer, but also a good first aid box staple for you skin too.
INGREDIENTS:
To state the obvious, Banana oat Aloe Vera Gel contains, amongst other ingredients, a fair amount of aloe vera (You’ll see it listed as aloe banderis in the ingredients list as it’s listed in it’s Latin name). Aloe Vera comes from the sap of the Aloe plant, a succulent plant with long spiky leaves. If you broke a leaf off the plant you would see the thick, sticky aloe vera substance ooze out, and you can actually apply this directly to your skin. For convenience however, you could always just use Banana boat aloe Vera Gel!
Here is a full list of the ingredients: Aqua, alcohol denant, glycerin, polysorbte 20, carboner, triethanolmine, aloe banderis, imidazolidinyl urea, parfum, lodopropynyl butylcarbamate, benzophenone-4, CL 19140, CL 42090.
PRICES & VALUE FOR MONEY:
In most high street stores that I’ve seen this product sold in, the 230g bottle sells for about £3.99 and the 453g bottle sells for about £5.99. Prices online and in some cheaper stores may differ, and of course you may see it on offer occasionally. Also, you may be able to get it cheaper if you search and buy from e-bay. I’d say for the amount of product you get, how long it lasts you and the overall quality of the product you’re getting, it’s ok value for money. It’s much cheaper over in the USA, and it’s a shame it’s not just a bit cheaper over here too to make it better value for money. If you’re going to use a lot of it over summer, it’s better value to by the 453g bottle as it works out cheaper per gram. A little does go a fair way though, and a large bottle last me quite a long time even with regular use.
SUMMARY:
This is a really great product to have in the summer, and also a useful product to have even in the winter. Its main benefit is an immediate cooling effect on your skin, and the fact that it brings fast relief. It is a multi-purpose product so very versatile. It has a unisex fragrance and can be used all over the body, including your face, and can also be used on kids too. Although it can be pricey, and not all laces sell it, it is worth while investing in a bottle especially during the summer months, as I’m sure, like me, you’ll find it has so many uses it’s invaluable! I’d definitely recommend anyone to try some and see what you think, I doubt you’d be disappointed.
OTHER PRODUCTS IN THE RANGE:
There is also an aloe vera lotion available, which I’ve not yet tried myself (though I may do I the future!). You can also get an Aloe Vera Vitamin E LipBalm by Banana Boat. Banana Boat also do ranges of tanning oils, sun protection, kids protection, sports products, face care and sunless tanners. Not all places seem to stock the full Banana boat range, so you may need to hunt around a bit to find the particular Banana Boat product you’re after!
