So what's wrong with them? Where to start? Initially, if you are not from the town that the branch is in your difficulties start immediately. If you are visiting a branch you get the impression that you will have to give a blood sample to even get the time of day off them.
If you move into an area, you can expect to wait a few years before they will treat like a normal human being. This is regardless of the fact that you have had an account with another of their branches for years. This might sound like 'Oh woe is me! Are banks so naughty to me!' My friends have had the same problem with them.
So what do they do? Well.....it is not entirely uncommon to have charges applied for being in overdraft when you haven't had one. For cheques to materialise out of thin air to debit your account (strangely enough they never appear to magically credit your account). And of course if they send you into overdraft by their mistake they will still charge you for it.
If you go into a branch there are always half the positions closed/unmanned. Of thosde that are you can guarantee that one of them will have someone that they know as a customer and will therefore spend an age talking to them. You can wait, after all where do you have to goto?
Their range of services is not actually bad. There is internet banking, credit cards, student accounts but you need to have either lots of money or be related to the staff to get any use out of them. You know, my dream is to win the lottery, go into my local branch, complain about all the crap they have put me through over the years, show them the cheque , then tell them I am going to put it in the Irish Permanent. So there BoI!
But don't let me put you off them, if you have plenty of cash.

...May Concern" instead of "The Bank Manager", to all countless the unreturned phone calls, to the different answers I got from each staff member when asked the same question, to the "Online Banking" website that seems like it was built by a teenager in 1999 for 20 quid and never updated since, it has been one bad experience after another. I have no idea how a financial institution like this can stay in business, but I hope it doesn't for much longer. ...

Bank of Ireland
I have been a customer of bank of Ireland for some time now, and I have to admit I have never had any problems with the service.
I have a basic saving account and a credit card with this bank - and I have been a loyal customer every since.
I opened an account when I was 17, and they were very helpful as I had no ID, so they worked hard with me to get a way of opening an account for me, which I appreciated very much. This account ... ...to physically go into a bank branch to withdraw or deposit money. I didn't mind as they had 3 branches in my area, which is very handy.
I then became a student and was offered a student credit card with all these brilliant deals, so in fell into the trap unfortunately, and now I owe them 800 quid . That's one thing I don't like about banks, they should give students credit cards, its an easy target, but its really unfair, banks know that ...

Advantages: Friendly service. Easy to open. Disadvantages: The charges!
I opened a BoI Current Account when I moved to Northern Ireland some years ago. When I read the terms and conditions of the account, I noted the usual, free banking whilst in credit. However, I later slipped into the red for a few days(as everyone does from time to time), and ended up being charged over £80.00. What the Bank of Ireland does not make clear in their terms and conditions is that if you slip into the red, customers are charged approximately 30p for every cheque, debit via switch, and direct debit for the whole of the quarter in which you were overdrawn, whether the account was in the red or not!
For someone who relies greatly on their cheques and debit cards, and who gets overdrawn every now and then, this account will throw your budget into complete chaos! ...

I was a first time buyer looking to buy at the very bottom of the slump six months ago and struggled to find a mortgage that didn't require huge deposits - I found it with the Post Office! The fixed rate (mine is 6.1) is high compared to the Bank of England rate but the lowest I found with a ten per cent deposit.
Their mortgages are through Bristol and West (think this has just changed to the Bank of Ireland). The website has all the different mortgage products listed and it pretty easy to understand, the staff over the phone helpful, answered all my questions and gave me a aprroval in principle pretty quickly. It's pretty easy to get through to them and there's no huge waits on hold. Also open on a Saturday, which is good when you work. You can also apply online and use their mortgage caluclator.
The doucmentation was reasonably ...
