Don't Just Stand There, Boil Something
Advantages: Very neat and easy to use. Up to heat instantly Disadvantages: Small gas bottles pricy but not intended for long use anyway
...a separate appliance like the Firestone Butane Gas Range comes into its own. There are plenty of food items that you might want to cook outdoors, which don’t justify the full “cremation”, new potatoes being several of them.
A friend had shown me one of these dinky little stoves a few weeks ago, and with the prospect of throwin’ a few kebabs together this weekend (watch it rain now I’ve said that. Come to think of it, ... ...I found it – The Firestone Butane Gas Range, neatly packed in a plastic “brief-case”. The Cost? £21 including VAT, and the 220gm gas canisters are about £1.25 each, or cheaper if you buy 5 at a time.
To look at, it’s nothing special, just a single gas ring with a right-hand compartment for the gas canister to lie flat in, a lever for locking the gas in place, and a heat control which also doubles as the igniter. The trivet ...

No More Getting Dirty In The Garden!!
Advantages: No mess, no more lighter fluid, easy to use Disadvantages: a bit dearer than normal charcoal but well worth it.
...again - untill I discovered Homebase instant lighting charcoal.
Getting Dirty
I suppose the main problem with a traditional bbq is the fact that when you come to set it up ready to light, you have to start stacking charcoal up neatly with strategically placed fire lighters or you have to pour lighter fluid all over the place and I think this tastes on the food. So all this normally results in you getting covered in black charcoal dust and ... ...I happened to be in Homebase and noticed their instant light charcoal. Loads of other people do it also but it seems to come in the same size packs and cost the same where ever you buy it. Basically it is a normal looking bag of charcoal but has four further bags inside all filled with charcoal.
How Does It Work Then?
All you have to do when you come to light your bbq is take one of the bags out and lay it in your bbq, you can use two if ...

Barbeque Without Tears
Advantages: Slick design, extra burner, no charcoal; takes 10 mins to heat up; can cook with it for ages; controllable Disadvantages: Probably too powerful; have a practise before cooking for company
...Not long enough!
The char-broil does away with all this. I bought mine from B and Q for 99 pounds. They didn’t have any gas, but I managed to get some from a local garage for 10 pounds for 12.5 kg, enough to last me the summer, I believe. You need a good hour to assemble the contraption, but it is very straightforward. Don’t be fooled by the instructions leaping from step 6 directly to step 9 - nothing has been missed - just carry on ... ...quality. You will need a flat head screwdriver, a philips' head and an adjustable spanner. The grill itself is about half a metre in length, and half of that wide, with another grill tiered above. This tier is well positioned in that it moves out of the way when you open the grill, but then moves back over the heat when you close it. Underneath the grill are two burners, one each to the left and right, which are capable of spewing forth as much heat ...
