I have been a user of Barclaycard for almost three years now. Up until recently I had been satisfied with the service: it did everything I wanted it to (i.e. buy things) and was accepted quite widely. However, recently I have had problems with my Barclaycard that have made me reconsider.

Firstly, the good points of Barclaycard. At a basic level, it does what a credit card should do. It is widely accepted as a method of payment, and there are quite a few methods of settling the balance at the end of the month.

The best thing about Barclaycard is the purchase protection after it. Despite becoming disillusioned about it (for reasons which are coming later), I have to admit that the level of purchase protection is excellent. On certain household electrical items costing over £50, it gives an extended warranty of an extra year just for purchasing the items on the Barclaycard and ringing a number with the details of the item. The purchase protection on most items though is not really worth much, as it is so limited. The cover is extremely short (90 days) and is restricted (fire and theft for items over £50).

The card has no annual fee, something they have scrapped from £10. On the other hand, at the same time they brought in lots of additional charges (see later).

These are the good points of the card. However, I have many gripes with it now. Other users of Barclaycard will not have experienced all of them I have had a long time without any problems; just recently many things have been going wrong with it.

The card has a fairly high APR. They've just recently cut it but it's still a huge 18.9%. This really is not a very good deal particularly at a time when card issuers are falling over themselves to attract customers with low rates.

They have recently introduced charges for quite a few things. I'm not totally certain about what they've introduced fees for as they've disguised it in a very long leaflet in small print with quite a lot of legal jargon. However, some of the things that they've slyly introduced include charges for exceeding the credit limit, not settling the monthly statement on time. They also charge interest for the full statement even if you pay off most of the bill. This happened to me one month: I had lost my statement, and so I paid at a Barclays with bank giro credit slip. I left about a pound unpaid on an approximate one hundred pound bill. Result: they charged me on the full amount. A bit unfair...

Their new reward point scheme is the much advertised Nectar reward point scheme. I'm sure everyone has already seent the adverts for Nectar reward points but just in case anyone has missed out, the scheme allows you to use the same reward card in a variety of shops including Argos, Sainsbury's and BP. However, you need to spend about £1000 on your Barclaycard to get a voucher worth £2.50 at Sainsbury's. This is better than the old reward scheme, but not by much; it really isn't that awe inspiring.

There are a few things that have happened to me, which have caused me to become extremely disappointed. I have been sent a bill that requires payment before I had received the bill. Given the charges leveled for late payment that grated, but I paid up but decided to complain. I emailed their customer services department and got no reply. I rang their national rate number and got an annoying computerised sorting system. When I finally got to the option of speaking to someone, I got asked to hold and forced to listen to muzak. I held the line for 15 minutes and then hung up, as I got no reply. This really hasn't endeared me to them, and I am going to write to them, but with so much choice for credit card providers out there, I would strongly advise against accepting a Barclaycard.

As an alternative card, I would strongly suggest the Egg Card for anyone who wants internet banking as they have a low APR and cashback, or the Nationwide Cashback card for anyone who wants to administer their account at a high street bank. This has the same level of purchase protection as the Barclaycard, the cashback as a reward, a low APR and good incentives for people who travel as it is widely accepted abroad and is cheap to use too. This one is my personal pick of the credit cards.

*Addendum* Just a brief additional note. Recently I suffered from credit card fraud on my Barclaycard, where someone topped up their mobile phone using my card without my knowledge. I finally sorted it out and didn't have to pay it in the end, but in the meantime they charged me interest on the amount and it took them 5 months of ringing them up and chasing them and letters back and forth. I no longer use them, and would really advise anyone else not to either.

I am shocked that it is rated in the top ten credit cards list. It has little to redeem itself other than the purchase protection on electrical goods, something which the Nationwide card also has, but with better rewards and cashback. I think the strong advertising campaign has a lot more to do with it's high rating than it's quality.

If you want a credit card, note that Egg comes top of the credit card list, and for good reason too.

Barclaycard is far more transparent than any other credit card on the market and charge less in fees than most. £20 instead of the normal £25. I have credit cards with many companies and find them to be the best. Alot of things have changed for the better at Barclaycard recently and I would stick with any bank that keeps its customer services in the UK.

I agree completely. I get the impression that they're using their reputation to get away with murder. And also, this is my problem.... Barclaycard + £1000 limit + student in 3rd year = big trouble
