I have been using Barclays Online Banking since it first began. Over the months they have regularly improved it so that it is easier to use and faster to get through security to get to your account details.

Barclays Online banking is available to Barclays Business and/or Personal account holders.

HOW TO REGISTER...
It is easy to set up the online banking if you are already an account holder. When I first did it they gave you a disk but now you can do it from the website by clicking on the register option on the home page (If you are unsure there is a demonstration link for you to see what you will be getting.)

If you are an account holder and over 16 years old you will need to give account information as well as details such as your mothers maiden name, memorable data and a password that will be used as your security to access you bank account details. You will then be sent in the post a passcode and membership number for you to start accessing the site. These can be difficult to remember at first so you can't really take their advice and memorise them and destroy them. However, if you use the banking quite regularly like myself, then you will remember them in next to no time at all.

If you are not an account holder you can apply for an account online and it will take about 15 minutes.

LOGGING IN...
From the home page you select the log in link and it will then ask you for you membership number. The next page asks you for your passcode, surname and numbered letters from your memorable word (ie: the 2nd and 5th letter). Thats it then you're in!

AT A GLANCE...
You are then taken to the At a Glance page which gives balance information on one page for all your Barclays Accounts.

From here you can click on those accounts to see an up to date statement and balance or click on any link to do any of the following:-
  • See Statements
  • Transfer Money
  • Pay Someone
  • Change Contact Details
  • Customise My Site
  • Set Up Standing Order
  • Change Payments
  • Change Transfers
  • View Balances
  • Export Date (to your computer)

All of the options are explained fully when you follow the link and instructions are clear and easy to follow. The only rule with Online Banking is that you must use either the enter button or click on the next or back links they provide. If you use your back browser or double click by mistake then you will be automatically logged out and have to go through security again. While this can be a nuisance if you look at it from a security point of view you realise that once you get used to it, it is not a problem and is there in fact to protect your details.OTHER SITE FACILITES...
On most pages there are links to give you information on other accounts and services available. These include:-
  • ISA's & Savings
  • Stockbrokers
  • Barclaycard
  • Overdraft Facilities
  • Loan Calculator
  • Budget Planner
  • Starting a Business
  • Mortgages, Pensions, Life Changes, Protection, Students
  • ATM Locator

SECURITY...
Now for the technical stuff. Encryption - When you enter your security log in data it is automatically encrypted so that no-one else can read it.

They have a number of invisible fraud-prevention checks in place as well. In addition to this Barclays have a number on built in firewalls to prevent and deter hackers and protect your account information.

To make it even more secure the online banking instructs your browser to no longer cache personal information (store your personal information).

Barclays claim to be the biggest online bank and take security very seriously. They even offer a guarantee that should you be the victim of online fraud on your accounts they will cover any losses.

TO SUM UP...
Basically I never have to enter Barclays Bank for anything other than paying in cheques. I can access all my accounts, pay direct debits, set up standing orders, transfer money from account to account, apply for new accounts/loans, apply to change my overdraft, see the latest mortgage/loan info, set advance payments and change any advance payments that I have set. I can do this at anytime day or night from any location as long as I can remember my membership number and memorable data.

So far in all time I have used this facility I have never had a payment go wrong or had any errors. If I have any queries I can email Barclays and get a prompt response.

The site is always up to date and any major changes they make to it are done at a time when it is likely to unaffect you (ie 3 am on a Sunday morning). The changes are also easy to follow and in the same easy to use format.

2 Million people use Barclays Online Banking facility and I think 2 million can't be wrong it certainly beats standing in a queue especially at this time of year!!

Thanks for reading.

I have used Barclays O B since it started and although I am not happy with interests rates and customer services, it is difficoult to find another bank that offers the same excellent level of service on online accounts. Marco

Katie-Jane I found this very informative so much so that I may look into arranging an account for myself. Well done Mike

I use Barcley on-line banking facility. I tend to find that it can be slow at times and on more than one occasion the site has had technical problems and I have not been able to access.
