Best High Street Bank (Ciao Hitlist)

This review relates only to the CURRENT ACCOUNTS provided by Barclays, especially the Additions Plus account. There is no special category for these and general reviews seem to concentrate on that aspect of banking service. I will start briefly explaining my situation, so it's clear where ... Read review

OVERDRAFTS, CHEQUES AND FRINGE BENEFITS

Advantages: reasonable package of benefits, decent online banking, let you use cheques paid in immediately
Disadvantages: charges, abysmal interest if in credit, big behemot, not ethical

...coming from. I hold the Barclays account jointly with my husband (it was originally his and I was added on to it when I found out that as a new arrival I can't get a 'normal' bank account here immediately) and we use it as our main household account. Apart from that I also have a Smile current account (see relevant review) which I use in parallel as my personal current account as well as the basic (card cash) account with Halifax. I have Internet ...
...I had my very won Barclays Connect card and was free to use the account.

Since then our standard Barclays Account became - somehow inexplicably - Barclays Additions account, and then, by our conscious decision, Additions Plus.

*EXTRA ACCOUNT FEATURES*

Additions Plus is one of the recently mushrooming premium accounts, which means that for a monthly fee you get a plethora of added-value benefits, some ... more

Barclays Bank - $££%%&^%^%**&*&@%!!!!!

Advantages: (+) expansive range
Disadvantages: (-) too many to mention...poor service, increasing prices, made many mistakes w/ my account

...first opened an account with Barclays Bank when I was 11 years old after being recommended by a school friend and her Mother. I had the normal savings account - a bank card to use at the ATM and bank branch itself, with a daily £50 limit. Between the ages of 11 and 15 I had no problems with the bank, until of course when I was 16; a week before my 16th Birthday my account was updated/upgraded. I now had a chip+pin card but my account was essentially ...
...off the charges, either. Despite Barclays having a £90 maximum charges policy within each monthly period, I was charged a further £150 - yes £150! So, my balance was now nearly £-300, all because I\'d been misinformed. I was told i would be refunded my charges yet, I was charged £30 again because the advisor hadn\'t actually made the refund. Eventually a manager refunded the whole amount and agreed to pay for my phone bill for me after much dispute. ...

BANKING ALL NIGHT LONG

Advantages: See review
Disadvantages: See review

I have banked with Barclays since I became old enough to have a bank account. I often read press articles that "tell" us that the great British public suffers from terrible inertia when it comes to changing their bank account, and that over 75% of us never do. I don't suffer from inertia. I like my bank, and have absolutely no reason to change accounts whatsoever. I often read the scurrilous tales of fees charged for bouncing cheques, which criticise ...
...don't believe that Barclays is any more sympathetic than its competitors but I never personally put them to the test because I don't go overdrawn. It's also worth remembering that your banking history is part of your credit scoring. The longer you have an account, the better your rating is. My first Barclays account was a Barclays Plus account. This offered the basic cash point card and chequebook and was an ideal account for me whilst I was at ...

Business as usual...by a load of bankers

Advantages: Good offers to new businesses.
Disadvantages: Lack of experience focused from Barclays towards the business.

...or a Relationship manager, as Barclays like to call them. They are supposed to be there to oversee your account as well offering practical and expert information as and when needed. The account also includes free online and/or telephone banking for the first year - both 24 hour service - which can be very handy for sorting out your finances and keeping them in check. You also receive a lot of fact sheets on business information as well as a pack ...
...to match the amount that Barclays had offered - therefore they wouldn't have given me the loan without notice of the agreement from the bank. This turned into a nightmare and, although I eventually got the overdraft, I wasted time I didn't have going to the branch and making endless phone calls. Secondly, the new manager. As I've already made you well aware the account manager was the biggest factor in choosing which bank I set up an account with, ...

The Bank that does give a damn

Advantages: Great customer support
Disadvantages: None

...keeping a healthy bank account Barclays invited me to upgrade my Electron card to a Connect card, which is more widely recognised, and they also offered me a Barclaycard. I applied for both, again thinking they would turn me straight down, and low and behold the new cards turned up within a week. A few months later I decided that I needed (wanted) a new car, so I telephoned my personal banker to enquire about a loan, again waiting for the inevitable ...

You have to register and wait for a login number and password but then all information on all of your accounts is accessible at a touch of a button. Barclays offer many other services for their personal customers including Pensions, Mortgages, Savings Plans, and ISA’s. I am ...

Barclays online banking in comfort

Advantages: Do all your banking at home
Disadvantages: None

My husband joined Barclays bank quite a few years ago just after he left school. That was just an ordinary current account until he started a computer course at college and then changed it over to a student account. About a year into college he needed some cash to help everyday cost of living and to run his car. So he started work with an agency in a food factory a month after me (That's where we both met) and then decided to leave his college course as he wasn't learning anything new. He then had to change the type of account he had as it was still classed as a student account which he was no longer. The bank as a whole was very helpful and the change was done quickly and efficiently. After we got married in 1998 we then changed the account into a joint account for one reason or another but mainly because I needed access to cash while ...

STUDENT BANKING @ BARCLAYS

Advantages: great service,
Disadvantages: can charge for using different atm machines

Barclays provide a great service for students. The reason I initially took a Barclays account was because it was the closest bank to uni, but that wouldnt be a big problem even if it weren't so close because there are so many branches of each type of bank scattered around. The no quibble interest free overdraft limit is £1250 which has proved to be very handy - and thats exactly what it is - NO QUIBBLE!! Friends who bank at other places have regular complaints about the service there bank provides - hassles getting there overdrat extended and things like that whereas I can ring up a branch and extend mine by phone. Quick and easy! ...

Barclays online very easy online banking

Advantages: see text
Disadvantages: see text

I, was introduced to online banking from my Barclays bank. They tempted me with a free internet access Barclays CD, Although, I declined that offer, I was tempted buy online banking. So, I clicked on to their web-site. First impressions, was that it was very well organised, nice blue colour not to strong. Quite a lot of information, and I liked the layout of the main text in the middle, surrounded by all the options. Well, I had never done online banking before, but I really wanted to. So, I was very grateful when yu could have a quick demonstration about the service they offered. I did think that very clever, as many people like myself where new to online banking. I was very impressed, more by the simplicity of the whole thing. It was so easy to pay bills. The format was so easy to follow, you could pay bills in a second ...
