Bar-room connaisseur and still a student at heart (broke, that is) I now work for an engineering firm dealing with some of their foreign clients. I'm not really an expert on anything, but have a pretty sound grasp of a wide number of subjects from prog...
I've been with Barclay's bank for years, and with their online banking service since last year somewhen. I'm under no illusions about Barclay's - friends and relatives have told me numerous horror stories about poor service and general tight-fistedness, and there are of course more recent and more highly publicised branch closures and security faults with their systems. Despite this, and largely because I am of the belief that all banks are equally mean, petty and tight-fisted, I have no reason to dislike their service. I have personally had no bad experiences with them - in fact I have had a few good one. . . . . . Their Online service is good. All your accounts can be viewed and compared, and money transferred between them instantly and without charge. The new e-savings account is great, calculating good rates of interest daily on amounts over 100quid, and with aonly a few minutes needed to transfer money into it you can drop your wages in there on pay day and grab a few days interest before your standing orders come out. You can apply for loans and overdrafts online, and set up/ revise payments and standing orders extremely easily. The site is fast and well laid out, although there are a few minor niggles. . . . . . Their new security measures are frustraingly pedantic at times (yet inneffective, apparently) - requiring your account number, passcode, surname and 2 random letters of a seperate password before you can log in. Occasionally I find myself logged out for impatiently clicking a link twice, and from time to time I can't even get in if the server is busy. This is especially frustrating if you have most of your money locked in the e-savings account because there is no way of accessing it other than via the website. . . . . That said the online service is more than satisfactory, and I consider the e-savings account a real bonus. If you have a Barclay's account their online service is a must. If your bank doesn't have online banking yet... well maybe you should consider this.
