I had decided to open an account with Barclays for the convenience of being able to pay money in at Barclays branches for occasions when none of my other banks' branches are nearby. This is important to me because I do receive a lot of cheques and Internet banking just doesn't help.

OPENING AN ACCOUNT

I took ID, credit and bank statements into my nearest Barclays bank, and waited in the waiting area until I was called up. When it was my turn, I was called over by a young male and invited to his desk where he preceded to enter my details into his computer. When completed, I was told that I couldn't have a Current account because my credit score isn't good enough. Poor start, but I was recommended a more basic current account, which I was happy with since I could still pay in at branches with it. I filled in a paper form, handed it in and left hoping for something through the post.

However, one year later (YES, ONE YEAR!), still no word, although I'd already opened an account with Natwest by then, I popped into the same Barclays branch to reapply for the current account again. This time, I was served by a lady, and I was told that it was all good and I was able to get Current Plus account, which is the basic current account giving me things like a debit card, cheque book, etc. She asked if I had a Barclays account before because my details from a year ago were still on their system! This shows that applications can just get lost and forgotten about and their staff are poorly trained.

I asked if I could have a small overdraft and I was told I was entitled to one. Whilst entering the details, she said she accidentally chose 'no' to the overdraft and that I can go back next week to ask for it to be applied, so I did. However, the lady relocated to a different branch, and I was served by another young male, whom told me I couldn't get an overdraft because of my credit score and to apply after three months. I did that three months later and even though I'd been paying in my salary of over £1000.00 each month, still couldn't get the overdraft. They say I had been paying in small amounts on some months but what the guy saw on his computer screen were the smaller deposits I make over the month, on top of my salary. They seem to just follow what their computer screen says for these decisions, but either way, why did the first lady tell me I was entitled to an overdraft in the first place?

One requirement for me was to be able to bank online as well as in branch so access to Internet Banking is essential. I had already asked for the PINSenty device, which is the calculator-like thing you need to insert your debit card into, to generate a code to log into Barclays Internet Banking, but I didn't receive it for two weeks since opening the account even though other things (cheque book, paying-in book, Visa debit card) . I visited the branch again to request it again, and then the same the following week and then the same on the following week only to be told that I had not been signed up for PINSentry, which meant I would not have been able to access my account online. On the third week, I was given a number to call to request it if it still doesn't arrive. They could have given me the number in the first place to save me two additional trips to the branch!

BRANCHES AND FACILITIES

There are plenty of Barclays branches and cash points, which can only be a good thing. Much like most other banks, not all cashier windows are manned a lot of the time but at some of their bigger branches, even when all windows are manned, the queues look like the queues you see at theme parks for popular rides! Luckily, like other banks, they do at least provide quick deposit boxes and machines so you can skip the queue.

Something good about their branches is that they always seem to have pens. Something even better about them having pens is that they invite you to take them home. The pens usually have a witty message on them such as "go on, you know you want to", "Take me, I'm yours" or "New home needed", etc and it seems to different every time I visit a branch, which is quite interesting. There are also usually plenty of paying-in slips so that's good.

RATES, CHARGES AND FEES

I've never been overdrawn so have not been hit by any of their charges. Only reason they're lower now (£8 per item) is because all banks had to lower the fees due to new laws. Like all other banks, once that happened, they try to find new ways to fleece you and Barclays's answer seems to be this Personal Reserve system (sort of like an agreed overdraft) where they charge you £22 if you go overdrawn by over £1, allowing you to be overdrawn for five days regardless of items but within a certain limit, after which they'd charge you £22 again. I had to opt out of this system. Current account interest rate is 0.1% for most but new accounts will pay no interest whatsoever so they're not competitive in terms of current accounts but this is in line with banks like Natwest.

ONLINE FACILITIES

Like every other bank, Barclays provides access to Internet Banking through their website. I find their website goes down a lot in the late evenings and 12am onwards, which I guess is fine but I also find that I get 'kicked off' and have to re-log in during the early evenings, which is annoying. This happens in all web browsers. There is a PINSentry card reader, which is needed to log in to their system.

I need my last name, twelve digit account number, last four digits on the front of my debit card and an eight digit code that the PINSentry generates. To generate the eight digit code on the PINSentry, I insert my debit card, enter my debit card PIN number. However, they've added a new option to allow access without the device after answering some security questions and providing debit card details. One thing that's a bit annoying is that, some fields that I need to input on their website are separated into multiple text boxes. Once I've completed one box, it doesn't automatically flow into the next one like those on the Natwest website. I feel this makes their site less usable. One really annoying thing about the statements in online banking is that they only seem to let you retrieve about 2 months worth of transactions. This is very inconvenient and means you need to rely on your paper statements.

VERDICT

Opening an account wasn't straight forward for me but probably not the same for everyone. Regardless, staff are definitely not well trained and unsure of some of the procedures (at least not at the branch I used), as I kept having to go back to request the PINSentry only to be told that I hadn't been subscribed to that service on the third visit. If you want a bank with good rates and good customer service, then Barclays probably isn't the one for you.

If you want convenient online facilities, then Barclays fails there too as their website isn't as good as those of Natwest and HSBC when it comes to usability and reliability. Also, the PINSentry thing, although Natwest has a similar device for security, you don't need to use it every time you want to log in, only when you create new Payees, which I feel is enough for security. If you want a bank with lots of branches for convenience, then I'd recommend them just for that reason. It's the only reason I opened an account, so everything else doesn't matter unless something goes wrong. I generally manage my money well enough to keep myself from going overdrawn but if you're not like this, then don't bother with Barclays. Barclays are the worst bank I've ever dealt with as I find my other banks to be more efficient with everything where Barclays have failed to meet my expectations, as well as showing more interest in having me as a customer. I simply do not feel like a valued customer!

Intereting review. I fell out with Barclays about 15years ago, moving to First Direct... unfortunately, they have also started charging £25 if you go overdrawn by anything over your standard £250 allowance, and they'll do it up to 4 times before contacting you. Call them, they'll try to sell you insurance or mortgage stuff, offering you £25 back for any service you take on - shysters, the lot of them. Moral is, keep a close eye, either on-line or via text, on cash movements on your accounts, then make sure everything balances before 8pm that day, or they'll get you, and get you big!

My Woolwich accounts got transferred to Barclays. It was a shock to the system after the excellent, friendly service in the Woolwich branch to go to Barclays and be treated like an anonymous number and I'm sure the staff are trained to be as unhelpful as they possibly can be. Pat.t x

I was with Barclays when I was a student - and they were awful. Changing banks was one of the first things I did after graduation!
